During Testicular Cancer Awareness Week, April 1-7, 2026, we are encouraging Veterans to "Check Your N**S" by committing to monthly self-checks which aid in early detection. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 15-35 and early detection is vital, as it is highly treatable if caught early.

To complete the self-check in the privacy of your home, first stand in a mirror prior to a warm shower to check for swelling. During the warm shower, gently roll each testicle between your thumb to ensure there are no hard or painful lumps. Speak with your VA provider for more information or to discuss concerns.

Washingtonian "Top Doctors" at DC VAMC are Caring for Veterans!

We are honored to announce that six DC VAMC physicians from the Cardiology and Dermatology Departments were among more than 2,000 cardiologists, dermatologists, and other physicians recognized as Washingtonian's 2025 Top Doctors during the awards reception held in February 2026.

This prestigious recognition is bestowed upon physicians who were selected by their peers based on questionnaires which asked for nominations of doctors they would choose for themselves or loved ones. The physicians who responded nominated thousands of doctors in the Washington metropolitan area. The list of “Top Doctors” is made up of the physicians who received the greatest number of recommendations within their specialties.

Each year, a number of Washington DC VA Medical Center physicians are named “Top Doctors” by Washingtonian Magazine, and the multidisciplinary team is always proud to honor and celebrate their contributions.

Congratulations to the Washington DC VA Medical Center’s Cardiology and Dermatology physicians:

Chief, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Director, Heart Center

Christian D. Nagy, MD

Mary Maiberger, MD

An Impactful Day of Service: DC VAMC Executuve Director Vamsee Potluri expresses appreciation for the Beazer Homes team during their 2nd annual Day of Service at the Fisher House. The dedicated Beazer team made a meaningful impact through donations and voluntary service, planting flowers, organizing food donations, and sprucing up rooms with new bedding. Thank you, Fisher House Foundation, for including the DC VAMC Fisher House in the National Day of Service.

Your support and efforts ensure Veterans and their family members have a comfortable stay -- a home away from home.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and your DC VAMC Health Promotions and Disease Prevention Team recommends colorectal cancer screening for average-risk Veterans who are age 45 - 75. Screening detects precancerous polyps or cancer.

Speak with your VA primary care provider about colorectal cancer screening, with option including a colonoscopy, stool-based test done at home, or CT colonography.
Remember, screening can prevent cancer or detect it early.

Your DC VAMC Ft. Belvoir CBOC team is wearing blue this month to broaden awareness and to remind Veterans about the importance of completing and returning your FIT kit.

This week, during National Nutrition Month, our DC VAMC Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are having you to focus on smart snacking which helps you to maintain energy, curb hunger, and support overall well-being.

Here are a few tips for making smart snack choices:
Pair Protein with Produce: Create balanced snacks such as apple slices with peanut butter, carrots with hummus, or a boiled egg with grapes.

Prep Grab-and-Go Snack Packs: Make healthy choices by prepackaging snacks such as nuts, trail mix, sliced veggies, or whole grain crackers into small containers or bags.

Schedule a Snack Break: Avoid mindless munching by planning snack times-set a reminder mid-morning or afternoon to keep your energy up.
