Bipolar disorder can affect entire families — yet the mental health needs of relatives often go unrecognized in research and care.

In the latest issue of the Journal of the National Hispanic Medical Association (JNHMA), researchers examine the prevalence of psychiatric conditions among 770 adult relatives of Mexican individuals living with bipolar disorder. Drawing on participants from Mexico City and Monterrey, the study found elevated rates of major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety and substance use disorders, with notable differences by gender and degree of relation.

The findings highlight the importance of early screening, family-centered mental health support and continued research to better understand risk factors in Latino communities impacted by bipolar disorder.
