We're proud to introduce Class of 2026 HLDF Fellow Christopher J. Collado!

Christopher Collado is a first-generation Dominican American from New York and an emerging public health leader at the intersection of policy, equity and innovation. He has served at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he supported strategic operations and led initiatives advancing the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into clinical and administrative workflows.

His commitment to public health took shape during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he witnessed how policy decisions disproportionately affected marginalized communities. He later served as a Senior Legislative Aide in the Ohio Senate, helping secure millions in state funding for health and community infrastructure initiatives.

Now pursuing a Master of Public Health at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, Christopher brings a strong foundation in leadership, public policy and service to the HLDF Fellowship.

The Journal of the National Hispanic Medical Association (JNHMA) highlights issues affecting Hispanic and Latino communities, with a focus on health equity and outcomes across the care continuum.

This week’s article examines surgical-oncological disparities within Latino/Hispanic/Spanish+ (LHS+) populations and critically explores the limits of the so-called “Hispanic Paradox.” While LHS+ patients may experience favorable outcomes in some contexts, the article underscores how broad generalizations can obscure inequities in cancer surgery — including delayed diagnoses, limited access to timely treatment, higher complication rates and more advanced disease at presentation.

Drawing on peer-reviewed research published between 2011 and 2025, the review analyzes how socioeconomic factors, limited English proficiency, health care access and cultural barriers shape surgical outcomes for conditions such as breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma and prostate cancer. The authors also highlight gaps in existing research and call for subgroup-specific, culturally responsive approaches to advance equity in surgical oncology.
