When people learn that someone has been sexually assaulted, they may suggest avoiding showering or changing clothes to preserve potential evidence. While this advice is well-intended, there are two important reasons it should be shared with care:

• It assumes the survivor wants evidence collected. There are many reasons why that might not be the case, and we should take care to ask what the survivor wants.

• A survivor may feel discouraged from seeking care if they have already showered or changed. The truth is, there may still be ways to collect evidence. Plus, a forensic exam can support a survivor’s health in many other ways, if that’s what they choose.

The best practice? Ask what the survivor wants, and provide information when it’s helpful.
