Relationships should be respectful, honest, and most of all safe! But unfortunately, dating violence among teenagers is more common than you think. 1 in 10 high school students experience it, and that’s why February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.

For teens who experience abuse, support is available. DCFNE is proud to be part of a network of care for survivors in Washington, D.C. People ages 12+ who have experienced intimate partner violence and people ages 13+ who have experienced sexual assault can receive a free, confidential forensic exam by calling the DC Victim Hotline at 844-4-HELP-DC.

This Black History Month, we recognize that Black survivors experience higher rates of sexual and domestic violence, while also facing greater barriers to care.

At DCFNE, we are committed to reducing those barriers, by providing free, confidential forensic exams to all who need them. We do this because we believe that access to compassionate, patient-centered care is essential to healing and justice.

As we honor Black history, we also reaffirm our commitment to equity, dignity, and care for all survivors in Washington, D.C.

What do forensic nurses do better? We care for patients on what is often the worst day of their lives. We listen and we affirm what happened to them. We help them understand their options. And we empower them to choose what is best for their health and safety.

Though trauma-informed care is not exclusive to forensic nurses, our training prepares us to go above and beyond for our patients when it matters most. One way you can support this important work is to snag one of our “Forensic Nurses Do It Better” t-shirts. Proceeds go towards providing free forensic exams to survivors of violence. Link in bio.
