Some diseases impact thousands – even millions – of people, yet remain underrepresented in research.

Not because they don’t matter, but because they’re harder to study, measure, or define.

At 60 Degrees, we believe progress starts by focusing on what’s been overlooked.

Our understanding of tick-borne diseases is still evolving.

For years, Lyme disease was often approached with short-term treatment, based on the assumption that the infection would resolve quickly. But for many patients, symptoms persist far beyond that initial window.

Babesia presents similar challenges. Infections don’t always follow a predictable timeline.

That’s why research matters. Studies like our B-FREE trial are designed to better understand these infections and help inform future treatment approaches.

There are currently no FDA-approved treatments for chronic babesiosis.

For many patients, that means limited options and unanswered questions, often, for years on end.

It’s one of the reasons studies like B-FREE are so important – and what we’re working to help change.

As Matt from emphasizes, for many patients treatment has historically focused on Lyme disease alone – without fully accounting for potential co-infections like babesiosis.

In more complex cases, especially where the immune system is already compromised, that gap can have real consequences.

That’s why increased awareness, better diagnostics, and continued research are so critical to improving outcomes.

For years, patients and clinicians have reported that tafenoquine may have activity against babesia. But anecdotal evidence can only take us so far.

The next step is formal research.

That’s the goal of our B-FREE clinical trial.

Tick season isn’t what it used to be.

In many parts of the U.S., ticks are active earlier in the year and remain active later into the fall. That means the window of potential exposure is longer than it used to be.

One of the drivers behind this shift is milder winters. When temperatures stay above freezing, ticks are more likely to survive, remain active, and expand into new regions.

Awareness can’t be seasonal anymore. Prevention matters year-round.

For a condition that may impact thousands of Americans each year, babesiosis remains under-studied.

And for patients, that often means navigating symptoms without clear answers.

The B-FREE trial is working to change that, and this is the team driving that work forward.

How big is a tick? Sometimes, no bigger than a poppy seed.

Nymph ticks are especially small, and responsible for many infections. Even adults can be as small as a sesame seed.

And that’s part of the challenge with tick-borne diseases – early exposure doesn’t always come with obvious signs.

Small enough to miss. Too important to ignore.

Chronic symptoms don’t always raise immediate concern, but that doesn’t mean they’re harmless.

Babesiosis is a parasitic infection that targets red blood cells, directly impacting oxygen delivery throughout the body.

This parasite infects red blood cells, the cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. When that process is disrupted, the effects are systemic.

Swipe to explore three symptoms of babesiosis that are often overlooked – but shouldn’t be.

Red blood cells make up the vast majority of cells in the body – around 80–84%.

That’s why babesiosis has such a widespread impact.

Red blood cells are responsible for delivering oxygen to every tissue. When they’re damaged or destroyed, the body has to work harder to keep up.

As the parasite invades, multiplies, and ruptures these cells, the cycle repeats, affecting millions over time.

Acute illness is easier to measure. Chronic illness is harder to define.

But complexity is not a reason to look away. It’s a reason to design better trials.

That’s the thinking behind B-FREE.
