Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research Enhancing Patient Care Through Advances in Biomedical Imaging

The Academy is an advocacy organization committed to advancing research in medical imaging to promote the health and well-being of patients. By engaging a community of developing and experienced imaging scientists, novel technology experts, patients and their advocates, we promote shared learning and communication on both current research and future initiatives. We also inform the public and policy makers about how imaging and image-guided therapies translate into disease prevention, earlier and more accurate diagnoses, and improved quality of health care. The Academy was founded in 1995 and is comprised of 28 of the major imaging societies and the 50 leading academic radiology research departments.

Dr. Kirti Magudia, representing the American Association for Women in Radiology (AAWR) at the Hill Day, illustrates the importance of investment in imaging research: “Radiology and imaging research have been transformative for medicine. In fact, radiology tests are so fundamental that almost everyone has had an X-ray, ultrasound, CT, or MRI. We must consistently invest in radiology and imaging research to enable critical discoveries needed to continue advancing and improving patient care.”

Continuing with our Medical Imaging Research Hill Day highlights, Dr. Robert Nishikawa illustrates the impact of advocacy on cancer detection, resource utilization, and patient outcomes: “Advocating for medical imaging is essential to ensure policymakers recognize how critical imaging research is to improving patient outcomes and strengthening the healthcare system. In breast imaging, for example, funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is driving the development of personalized screening protocols tailored to each woman’s individual risk profile. This work has the potential to make screening mammography not only more effective in detecting cancer earlier, but also more efficient in how healthcare resources are deployed.”
