It’s no secret that laboratory medicine is increasingly driven by data and analytics. Laboratory medicine professionals have increasingly more access to data but may not always have the right tools to use it to improve patient health outcomes.

Dr. Shannon Haymond, former ADLM president and faculty member of the Data Science in Laboratory Medicine Certificate Program, discusses our new educational offering that’s designed to bridge this gap, as well as the important role of data science in today’s labs: https://ow.ly/GMh450YiOnE

Currently, people with early-stage pancreatic cancer have a 13% chance of surviving for only 5 years.

Early diagnosis significantly increases their chances of survival, but only 1 in 5 are diagnosed when surgery is an option.

To make matters worse, diagnostic imaging technologies have limitations in detecting early-stage tumors, and no biomarkers are approved for diagnosis.

A new study utilizes a technique which gives a more comprehensive analysis of patient samples. Read the Scientific Short: https://ow.ly/sJXE50YikcY

Recently the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) requested information on how to adopt and accelerate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical care.
As the leading association in clinical laboratory testing and technology, we recommend that the federal government support:

• The harmonization of clinical lab test results to enable comparability of test results across testing sites and methods.
• The use of representative data to develop accurate AI algorithms for guiding patient care.
• The validation and verification of AI systems to ensure accurate lab testing.
• Appropriate test ordering protocols to better patient outcomes and reduce costs.

Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Artificial intelligence in prediction, diagnosis, and classification of kidney diseases,
• Biomarkers of acute and chronic kidney disease,
• Clinical informatics,
• Genetics and genomics,
• Molecular mechanisms of chronic kidney disease, including glomerular diseases,
• Novel approaches to estimating and directly measuring glomerular filtration rate,
• Redefined epidemiology of disease from population-based datasets or cohorts,
• Targeted therapeutics of kidney diseases, and
• Kidney transplantation.

Lung cancer is among the most diagnosed cancers in the world.

Nonsmall cell lung cancer in particular is the most common type of lung cancer within the U.S. Although tissue biopsy is the current gold standard for lung cancer detection, it is highly invasive for a few reasons:

• It necessitates the extraction of a sample of tissue for analysis
• It carries risks of bleeding or infection
• It poses inconveniences from a patient perspective

The development of a minimally invasive test, utilizing a blood or urine sample, would streamline patient care.

Fortunately, a promising approach to develop such a test lies in the field of computational proteomics, which uses advanced computational tools and algorithms to analyze large-scale proteomic data.

Explore computational proteomics’ potential role in cancer detection in this recent Scientific Short from the Academy of Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine: https://ow.ly/f7Ty50YeqUZ
