Relying solely on the central laboratory for urinalysis testing comes with the risk of losing patients to follow up.

In this episode of Laborastories, hosted by Dr. Ian Lentnek from Siemens Healthineers, Dr. Nicholas Larkey, point-of-care (POC) medical director at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, discusses the advantages of POC testing for urinalysis and how to leverage it to increase workflow efficiency, generate faster results, and improve diagnostic accuracy.

As we age, cardiac-specific and noncardiac-specific biomarkers can frequently be above the normal range of concentrations established in healthy middle-age general population cohorts. This can make it challenging for clinicians to interpret biomarker results in older adults in a diagnostic setting.

Direct measurement of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is widely used and recommended by professional society guidelines despite its potential limitations in patients with hypertriglyceridemia and low LDL-C. Out of the three assays tested, one in particular showed the best potential for helping with clinical decisions for these patients. https://ow.ly/lwwu50Xn939

Most patients who take direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) do not require regular monitoring with coagulation testing, which measures the blood’s ability to clot. But there are other scenarios in which they might need this testing.

Because DOACs directly interact with the same clotting factors at play in certain coagulation tests, selecting the right approach can be tricky in these cases.

New ADLM guidance helps clinicians and laboratorians navigate testing for patients taking DOACs. https://ow.ly/tm2250XmNjr

The Canadian Laboratory Initiative on Pediatric Reference Intervals (CALIPER) recently collaborated with Roche to establish pediatric reference intervals for 16 electrolytes and metabolites, and 12 enzymes, proteins, and lipids on a new immunoassay system.

As the system becomes more widely adopted in clinical laboratories, these findings will help ensure the most appropriate pediatric reference intervals are available for use.

As access to antiretroviral therapy has expanded, the number of HIV-positive children has decreased — but the number of HIV-exposed but uninfected children has risen.

This Scientific Short discusses the health disparities among marginalized communities that are present at every stage of the HIV care continuum. https://ow.ly/zPgy50XkuQI

Dr. Amy Pyle-Eilola discusses how pediatric reference intervals (PRIs) can change dramatically depending on various factors, such as whether a child is born prematurely or full-term and puberty. This video underscores how the lack of normal, healthy pediatric patient data for each unique age group makes it difficult to generate quality PRIs.
