Today I mulched and set up the apiary for the arrival of three new hives on Friday.
This past winter we lost 7 of our 8 hives. It's devastating when creatures in your care perish - especially when you aren't exactly sure why.
The past few weeks I've been taking the Cornell Small Farms Beekeeping course and consulting with other beekeepers to try to learn how to do a better job.
I'm feeling empowered with more knowledge and a deeper understanding of the trials and tribulations of colony life. As a result, I've made a few changes to our hive set up to increase air flow and more easily monitor pest pressure.
The bees do so much for us - I really hope to do a little better by them this season!
