Since moving here, I have been confronted often with the perception from both church leaders and community members that yoga leads to Satan and that when you practice yoga, you are worshiping Hindu deities.
That simply isn’t true! One of the reasons I’m offering a full day yoga retreat on December 6 is to help the community understand what it truly means to practice yoga. I’m going to take a moment now and just express the truth about yoga and how it complements ones sacred and devotional relationship with Jesus Christ.
I love Jesus and I love yoga and and here’s what I hope you and those in your orbit understand.
The word yoga means union—a return to wholeness and alignment between body, mind, and spirit. It’s not a religion. It’s a spiritual discipline, much like prayer or contemplation, that helps us quiet the mind and open the heart to experience the presence of God more directly.
Through breathwork, movement, and meditation, yoga teaches us how to regulate our nervous system, release fear, and dwell in the peace “that passes all understanding.”
For many of us, that deepens—not diminishes—our devotion to Christ.
💗 A Complement, Not a Conflict
In more than 500 hours of formal yoga training, I’ve never once been asked to worship a deity or renounce my faith. Yoga draws from ancient Eastern philosophy, but its purpose is universal: to help human beings awaken to the divine within.
When a yoga teacher mentions words like Om, Namaste, or refers to archetypal energies like Shiva or Shakti, those are symbols of divine qualities—not “gods” to be worshiped. Just as Christians might meditate on the compassion of Christ or the light of the Holy Spirit, yoga practitioners reflect on love, peace, and consciousness as expressions of God’s nature.
✝️ The Common Ground
Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you.”
Yoga teaches that the Divine dwells in the heart of every being.
Both traditions invite us inward—to stillness, humility, and love.
Yoga simply offers tools—breath, awareness, posture—that help us live those truths.
🌸 A Practice of Peace
When you see someone practicing yoga, they’re not worshiping idols.
They’re learning to breathe, to quiet their mind, to listen deeply, and to live from the heart.
For those of us who walk with Christ, yoga becomes another way to say yes to His invitation:
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
If you would like to understand what it means to practice yoga join me December 6 for a day exploration of the eight limbs of yoga on how each limb aligns with the teachings of Jesus.
