Great resource about play skills!

Play development by stages and ages summarized.

There are six stages to play development:
Unoccupied, Solitary, Onlooker, Parallel, Associate, and Cooperative Play.

Each stages has a corresponding age. These age ranges are guidelines for parent and professionals to refer too. It should be noted that play is individualized to each child. If your child has not reached certain milestone or stages, and you are concerned, reach out to your pediatrician for further evaluations.

It is also important for adults to limit their 'realistic interference' to the imaginary play of a child. The game, activity, or overall idea does not need to make logical sense.

So next time your child is play, observe what they are doing. Is it a group effort resulting in cooperative play? Are they inching closer to a peer during circle time, but not yet engaging? We are able to tell a lot from observing a child at play.

Encourage all stages of play. Encourage appropriate sharing or kindly refusing to share. Encourage competitive play with winners and loser. Encourage practice. Encourage outdoor play.
