Sweet Pea Childbirth Preparation

Sweet Pea Childbirth Preparation We take learning beyond the prenatal visit and strive to be a trusted resource for expectant couples For many years this was the only option. See you in class!

Sweet Pea Childbirth Preparation, based in Washington D.C., was founded in 2015 by Lisa Holloway, a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner, to fill a void in women’s health education in the greater DC community. After having her second child, spending years answering the questions of friends and patients on an individual level and teaching private childbirth education classes, Lisa realized that her personal and professional experience made her uniquely equipped to address the needs of expectant couples in a group learning format. Lisa founded Sweet Pea to round out the prenatal experience and deliver this educational service in a patient friendly way. Your prenatal visits are focused on monitoring your health and the well-being of your unborn baby. Couples however need so much more than blood pressure and weight checks to feel ready for the birth experience. Traditionally expectant parents are referred to an all-day hospital-based childbirth education program and often come back to the office disappointed, feeling that they spent a lot of valuable time attending an impersonal class that lacked the information they needed and wanted. With 11+ years of clinical experience, Lisa noticed trends in patient questions and concerns and the absence of available information for women about their bodies and childbirth. Armed with these trends and knowledge from thousands of patient visits, Lisa knows what expectant mothers need to know for their birth. Lisa ensures expectant mothers and their partners receive the information they need AND want so they are prepared for their birth. Expectant couples and new parents are always asking friends and family for advice. At Sweet Pea we strive to be your trustworthy resource. We hope to instill you with the confidence you need to have the best birth possible. We can not minimize for you the sometimes overwhelming aspects of parenthood but we can help you be more prepared to bring your new baby home.

If only babies came with a manual, right? Here’s a pro tip: Keep baby’s sleep environment safe and cozy. Keep an eye on the clock and understand baby's sleep patterns to better anticipate why your baby may be crying.

✅ Lay baby down on their back.
✅ Keep the crib free from pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals.
✅ Try a swaddle (it’s like a hug, but for sleep!) until your baby starts rolling

And remember, if you’re sleep-deprived, you’re not alone! Taking naps when you can can work wonders.

👶✨ The first moments with your baby are so important. Skin-to-skin contact not only helps bond you to your baby but also regulates their temperature and encourages breastfeeding.
So, once your little one arrives, don’t be shy—get cozy, skin-to-skin style!
🤱 Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, that early bonding is priceless.

🚨 Myth Buster Time! 🚨

1️⃣ You can tell the gender of the baby by the shape of the mothers belly

Truth: the shape of a mothers belly has to do with a number of factors including the position and size of the baby, the placental location and a woman's general body shape specifically the length of her torso.... and nothing to do with gender. Its fun to guess though!

I’ll teach you how to prepare for both the expected and the unexpected.

🚨Breath in… Breath out… Repeat! It may sound simple, but focusing on your breath during labor can help manage pain and keep you centered. I recommend practicing deep breathing exercises now, so you’ll be ready when the time comes.

Pro tip: Slow, deep breaths help activate your relaxation response. Relaxation in labor helps the progression of labor as well as pain management. And hey, it’s an easy skill to practice—no equipment needed!

What breathing technique worked for you during labor? Let me know in the comments!

💡 Did you know that labor has phases? Understanding them can help you feel more confident as you approach your big day! Let’s break it down:

Early labor – The start of things, not too intense yet.
Active labor – The contractions get stronger, and it's go-time!
Transition – The final stretch (pun intended) before pushing begins!
Knowing what’s ahead helps you prepare emotionally and physically. Don’t worry, mama, you’ve got this! 💪
