Some of the amazing 🚢 🥘 we’ve gotten to enjoy for the first two days: Escargot (so much better than I thought it would be), a cold carrot cumin soup, watermelon salad, crab cakes, pate, roasted feta/pickled beets/jalapeño oil app and of course plenty of salmon.

I’ve thought a lot about the past few days of traveling and how EATING SKILLS transfer to new situations so much better than EATING RULES.

While plane food is limited and eating in an airport can feel rushed, the cruise food feels almost unlimited and very leisurely. We could eat something 24/7 if we wanted and on one occasion so far, food just showed up to our room unexpectedly.

Having skills to recognize your own hunger as well as contextual skills to think of how to be prepared for future hunger or scheduled meals can make the food part of traveling enjoyable. (It may not help long customs lines though…!)

Eating competence skills also improve the before and after of a trip. Imagine NOT being afraid of “eating too much” on vacation or having any regret over what you ate when you come back home!

If you’re interested in learning more about eating skills rather than dieting rules, I’d love to work with you!

This is an exercise that has helped me tremendously before big shifts, change of seasons and even trips. Rather than make a “to-do” list, try to visualize what calm would look like.

When I try to do a to-do list I tend to get sidetracked in all the things other people need from me or create unrealistic expectations for my time and capacity.

With back to school starting this Friday, I made this list by mentally walking through the morning and then afternoon pick up. Several of the items are based on past experience (no matching socks, piles of school papers with no place to go, having to make an emergency trip to the pediatrician for updated vaccination forms the day before, etc. to name a few!)

This “calm” list has guided what I spend my time working on and each little task completed feels like such a gift to myself. It also keeps my focus on what is important for us and not worrying about trying to also do all the things that may be important to other families.

What are some things that would make you feel calm about the upcoming school year?

Last night we wrapped up a 2 week road trip that included time with lots of family and friends! (And gas station icees!)

I soaked up every minute of it AND I’m also very happy to be home and stay put for a few weeks!

Who else is feeling a pull toward the more predictable routines that fall brings?
