Robert Harbstreit

Robert Harbstreit of Washington, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

Bob was born on April 6, 1936, on the Harbstreit Farms in Daviess County, Indiana, the first child of Carlton and Lena (Risley) Harbstreit. Bob attended Plainville High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon completing his duty in Germany, he spent many years in the financial management industry. Although he wasn’t aware of it at the time, he was destined to spend the majority of his working career in aviation.

Bob learned to fly his father’s airplane at ten years old, which ignited his lifelong passion for aviation and led into a 30-year career until his retirement. During his career, Bob was the personal pilot of the late William A. Cook. Their travels and adventures took them all over the world. One of Bob’s last flights was with his son Nathan as captain.

While working at Cook, Bob established and was president of several Cook companies, including Cook Corporate Flight Department, Cook Aircraft Leasing, Cook Aviation–Fixed Base Operation, Star Travel Services, and Star of Indiana Bus Company. In addition, he was responsible for all company-owned vehicles.

After Bob retired, he went home to his beloved Harbstreit Hill. The farm belonged to his grandfather, a man he loved very much. In fact, Bobby was born on this farm. He spent hours in his woodworking shop, creating beautiful pieces for his friends and family. He loved having coffee with his friends in “The Boardroom,” located inside his big red barn.

He was a man of faith and a member of Evangelical Community Church in Bloomington and, upon relocation to Daviess County, attended Bethany Christian Church.

For over 50 years, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Moose International, and Quiet Birdmen.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna; his son, Nathan (Danna), and grandsons, Zed and Gunnar; his son, Lee (Tammy), their five children, Emily Rose, Eli, Sage, Cy, and Stone, and three grandchildren; his son-in-law, David Tompkins, and his children, Sheldon Tompkins, Holly Naujkot, David Adam Tompkins, and Candace Rogers; eleven grandchildren; and his sister, Karla Wildridge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carlton and Lena Harbstreit; his daughter, Melanie Tompkins; and his brother-in-law, Ron Wildridge.

Bob will be dearly and sadly missed by all who knew his sunny and, at times, larger-than-life personality.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 24, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Ed L. Lee Mortuary

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Ed L. Lee Mortuary, with Pastor Tom Watson officiating.

Burial to follow at Plainville Cemetery.

William August "Bill-Gus" Hayes

William August “Bill-Gus” Hayes, age 85, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on January 23, 2026. He was born on January 29, 1940, in Washington, Indiana, to the late Joseph W. and Pauline (Ebler) Hayes. William devoted his life to his family, his work, and the many communities he served.

He graduated from Washington Catholic High School in 1958 and proudly served six years in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

William was a member of the American Legion and United Auto Workers Local #23. He retired from General Motors and from his role as a UAW Representative after more than 40 years of dedicated service, earning numerous honors and recognitions. He served as President of UAW Local #23, representing union members at the GM Chevrolet Indianapolis Truck & Bus Plant. He was later promoted to Region 3 Co-Director of the UAW-GM Center for Human Resources and ultimately retired as a UAW International Representative.

Following his military service and prior to his 42-year career with General Motors, Bill worked for the B&O Railroad, where he labored as a fireman, rail switcher, braker, and car sorter.

William was a meticulous landscaper who took great pride in his yard, trees, shrubs and flowers. To him, trimming and weeding were an art, and he spent countless hours and weekends ensuring everything was in pristine park-like condition.

One of Bill’s greatest passions was basketball. He played point guard on his high school team and continued playing while serving in the Navy. He later coached his sons in the Mooresville Junior Basketball League, forming lasting friendships and serving on the league’s Board of Directors. During basketball season, he often volunteered to work third shift at the Chevrolet Plant so he could attend every practice and game.

Bill married the love of his life, Nancy (Cannon) Hayes, in 1964.

He is survived by his wife Nancy; sons William “Billy” Hayes (Carrie) and Brian Hayes (Lise); daughter Lori Johnson (Adam); sisters Sharon Decker (Ron) and Rita Barnett (Ed); and his beloved grandchildren: Sidney Leicht, Leah Hayes, Catie Hayes, Emily Hayes, Cannon Hayes, Caroline Hayes, Paige Hayes, Clare Hayes, and Selah Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

William was immensely proud of his family, whom he loved deeply. He worked hard to ensure all his children received a college education. His grandchildren, however, meant the world to him. Affectionately calling them hon, honey, bud, or buddy, he attended as many of their activities, games, and events as possible, often slipping them money for a souvenir or milkshake.

Public visitation will be held on Thursday, January 29 (his birthday), from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Carlisle-Branson Funeral Home in Mooresville, Indiana. A brief service with military honors will follow.

A second service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, in Washington, Indiana. William will be laid to rest alongside his parents at Saint John Cemetery. Yvonne Evans will officiate, and the Washington American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside rites.

Margaret "Agnes" Wade

Margaret “Agnes” Wade, 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, March 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Agnes was born on May 7, 1934, in Daviess County, Indiana, to Margaret M. (Grannan) Toy and John C. Toy. She graduated from Montgomery High School in 1952, carrying with her the strong values and work ethic that would define her life. On August 27, 1953, she married her beloved husband, Paul Wade. Agnes worked at Uniroyal and later worked side by side with her beloved husband at the fertilizer plant and on the farm, before embracing her most treasured role as a homemaker. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, and steady love. She had a quiet strength about her — the kind that held her family together and made everyone feel safe and welcome. Her greatest joy was always her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, each of whom carried a special place in her heart.

She leaves behind her children: Marsha Ann (Jay) Oswalt of Beech Grove; Martha Arvin of Greencastle; and James C. (Sally) Wade, Mike (Jenny) Wade, John Wade, Ronald (Mindy) Wade, and Pat (Michelle) Wade, all of Washington.

Agnes also leaves her cherished grandchildren: Michelle Mascus; Matthew, and Paul Arvin; Krista Swartzentruber; Victoria Rust; J. Jordan Wade; Hilary Jagodzinski; Ross Wade; Jackson Wade; Amanda Niles; Anthony Wade; Olivia Wade; and Caleb Wade; along with her 20 precious great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her siblings, Vincent (Connie) Toy and Mary Mullen.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; her devoted husband, Paul; her grandsons, Benjamin Arvin and Robert Oswalt; her brothers, John J. Toy and James M. Toy; her sister, Betty L. Craney; and her son-in-law, Tim Arvin.

Though her family grieves her passing, they find comfort in the beautiful legacy she leaves behind — a legacy of unwavering love, gentle guidance, and a life faithfully lived for those she treasured most. Her memory will forever be a blessing to all who knew her.
