A business is only as good as the employees who work there. Jennifer and I are grateful to all our current and past staff members. We have been blessed with amazing people who care about the patients they serve. As National Physical Therapy Month wraps up this week, we want to say thank you to our current staff for all they do for JET.

Physical therapy plays such a critical role in improving an individuals balance. PT can also help to prevent a loss of balance and improve small declines in balance to prevent falls. Balance training often involves patients performing exercises that simulate daily situations that makes an individual uncomfortable about their balance. These situations are not reckless but rather supervised to prevent falls. As patient's balance improves the level of balance training and daily situations are progressed until a patient reaches a higher and safer level of function. It's rewarding to see a patient's confidence improve the right balance training program.

Physical therapy can address lesser known conditions. PT is most known for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. However, we have staff members trained to address dizziness/vertigo, pelvic floor urinary incontinence and pediatric developmental conditions.

Meet our new physical therapist Jenny Haley. We are excited to have Jenny as part of our team. She is originally from Springfield, IL and moved to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa, earning a B.A. in Elementary Education in 2020 and Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2024. She quickly fell in love with the state of Iowa and the Hawkeye spirit, so she decided to stay in the area after graduation. She enjoys working with a wide variety of patients and has a strong interest in pediatrics. She particularly enjoys getting to know her patients and helping them meet their goals and return to the things that are meaningful to them. Jenny is an avid runner and loves training for races. She’s also a huge fan of all Hawkeye sports! In her spare time, Jenny can be found out on the trails, in the weight room, reading a book, and enjoying quality time with friends and family.

I was covering the girls soccer match last night between Washington and Mid-Prairie. I noted how much the players had improved from the beginning of the season and how valuable sports can be for students. The girls skills had improved but they also understood the game better and their teamwork had improved. The girls were improved at being coached. As an athletic trainer I also see how they have learned how to manage injuries and the work it takes to stay healthy or play with a minor injury. I really enjoy being able to witness the growth of the student athlete and being involved in that process.
