Herbalist & Alchemist’s Significant Sustainability Achievements Recognized by AHPA Environmental Impact Award
Washington, NJ (March 12, 2026) – Herbalist & Alchemist, the first herbal products company to become a certified B Corp, was recognized for their significant sustainability programs with the American Herbal Products Association - AHPA Environmental Impact Award at the annual AHPA member meeting in Anaheim, California on March 3, 2026.
The AHPA Environmental Impact Award recognizes an individual, organization, or company that has implemented innovative sustainable or regenerative business practices that will continue to have a meaningful positive impact on the environment.
Since becoming the first herbal products company to become a certified B Corp in 2010, H&A has used the documentation required by that certification process to set goals for further improvement. The entire staff is deeply involved in sustainability initiatives. Their Green Team includes someone from every department, which has resulted in excellent ideas with measurable impact and fosters buy-in from the entire team. B Corp U.S. & Canada
Here are just a few of their sustainability achievements:
🌿H&A’s Scope 1 direct greenhouse gas emissions for the entire company are comparable to what a family of four produces.
🌿Their commitment to sourcing locally as much as possible, including from local farmers and wildcrafters, significantly reduces Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions.
🌿In 2021 Herbalist & Alchemist for the first time met Zero Waste standards, which requires less than 10% of waste be landfilled and the other 90% diverted, reused, donated, or composted.
🌿In 2024 the company reached 96%, and now needs only a single trash can. This is less than half the amount of garbage one average American produces in a year (1,788.5 lbs), for the entire company (602.84 lbs). That year the company recycled 11,079 lbs of material, and upcycled 1,555 lbs of material.
🌿H&A generates over 6,000 lbs of compost. The natural byproduct of the fresh herb production process, marc, becomes high-quality compost distributed to local farmers. All paper towels, previously one of the main landfilled items in their garbage, are turned into compost by a specialty service.
🌿The ice packs keeping the fresh herbs H&A processes into finished products cool during shipping are donated to local children’s camps and food pantries.
🌿The 55-gallon drums become rain barrels, raised vegetable beds, and are used for equine barrel racing.
🌿Sustainability and not creating refuse was top of mind when H&A moved to a larger facility. Reusable crates were rented rather than relying on boxes, and any boxes that were used were repurposed. The only moving material bought was pallet wrap, which a local organization turned into park benches.
🌿H&A believes that carbon-storing, regenerative agriculture is essential in combating climate change. To that end, H&A sources many raw materials from growers following Regenerative Agriculture, Organic, Permaculture, Biodynamics, Regenerative Organic, Forest Grown, FairWild, Ecologically and Ethically Wildcrafted, Wild-Simulated, Non-GMO and Organic Compatible practices.
When accepting the award with co-owner David Winston, RH (AHG), H&A CEO Beth Lambert said "We are deeply honored by this recognition. David and I came together as business partners because we have a commitment to business that is good for people and good for the earth, rooted in the principals of Permaculture and Herbal Medicine. The people that work with us have this same philosophy. This award belongs to our entire staff especially our Green Team, with a member from every department. Their enthusiasm and excellent ideas with measurable impact led us to incorporate new practices, re-examine how we work, and meet Zero Waste standards all within the framework of maintaining our profitability. As a certified B Corporation since 2010, sustainable sourcing, supporting education and local business are part of our culture."
