I want to announce that this week I merged my practice with Kevin Biermann, O.D., and he will be taking over. I have complete confidence in Kevin. He is from Washington, graduated from Borgia High School, and has a high level of skill and compassion. I know once everyone gets to know him they will like him a lot.

I want to take this time to thank the many salt of the earth people I have met that helped make this journey all worthwhile. I have met so many interesting, wonderful, kind people, and I have so many fond memories of my 40 years in practice.

I wish you all well. Stay safe. This covid thing will be over soon.

We have been having good results with this so far.

Lockdowns and stay-home orders to minimize spread of the novel coronavirus consequently maximized digital device use as millions of Americans pivoted to remote work and schooling. Now, this always-on, work-from-home mindset could sow not only mental but also visual fatigue.

We hope everyone is safe and healthy. We are planning to resume routine eye care on Monday, May 11. We will follow all CDC and state and local guidelines, practice social distancing when appropriate, and ask that you wear a mask while in the office. We are limited to 10 people in the office so we will need to minimize visitors accompanying the patient.

If you had an appointment that was cancelled, we will reach out to you and work through that list first. If you have an urgency or emergency please call and we will make sure you get the attention you need.

This pandemic is the first time this office ever closed for any length of time, and we started in 1945. We hope that soon all restrictions will be lifted, but for now we have to live with the "new normal."

In discussing strategies for reopening the U.S. economy, an economist on the Today Show notes optometry practices and other essential businesses should be the first to reopen “and then very carefully see if we have [coronavirus] flare-ups for the foreseeable future until we get an effective treatment or a vaccine.” Learn more: https://on.today.com/2V5Qpvs

If you wear glasses, like I sometimes do, you know that sickness masks fog them up right quick. The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has tips on how to avoid that.

Apparenlty one of our emails has been hacked, and a number of people have received a weird email that says Hello from Brian Sumner, and asks where are you now, and can you help? Please ignore this as we try to fix this problem.

After much consideration we have decided to heed the recommendations of the American Optometric Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and postpone all routine eye care visits effective today, March 20, 2020. We will operate with a reduced staff and hours for the time being. If you have an appointment from March 24 thru April 1 we will contact you to reschedule. Starting Monday March 24, we will here from 8 am until noon Monday thru Friday.

Our goal is to limit the number of people in the office at any given time. If you are coming to pick something up, give us a call from the parking lot and we will either deliver it to your car, or have you enter when we can keep social distancing intact, and to be able to disinfect the office between visitors.

If you are having an eye emergency, please call ahead rather than just stopping by. We will take care of you, perhaps using telemedicine, and still limit your exposure.

If you need a refill of your medication or you find you are running out of contacts, call our office and we will try to get you enough of a supply to get you through.

This situation is very fluid and we may have to change our plans quickly. We will be in contact with you throughout the process.

Thank you for understanding as we do our part to avoid COVID-19 transmission while protecting our patients and staff. We look forward to resuming routine eye care as soon as possible. Call 636-239-2179 with any questions.

ATTENTION: You might be hearing or reading about the use of chloroquine or its cousin, hydroxychloroquine (plaquenil) for the treatment of coronavirus. DO NOT TAKE THIS WITHOUT THE SUPERVISION OF YOUR MEDICAL DOCTOR. These medications can be toxic to the macula. They can cause IRREVERSIBLE VISION LOSS. We have many patients currently on this medication and they must be tested for visual field change, retinal depostits, and color vision every 6-12 months. You must have these tests done prior to starting treatment. Please consult your doctor, and watch the video below.
