She almost didn’t schedule the colonoscopy.

Fran Swartzentruber felt fine. No major symptoms. No urgent reason to worry. It was just a routine screening — something she knew she should do.

But that routine colonoscopy revealed something unexpected: a concerning mass.

What happened next is why early detection matters.

Because Fran chose to be screened at Daviess Community Hospital, the issue was identified early — before it had the chance to become something far more serious. With the care of Dr. Marcus Kurucz and the team at Washington Surgical Associates, she had a clear plan, trusted local providers, and support close to home.

Colonoscopies are one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent colorectal cancer. They don’t just detect cancer early — they can prevent it by identifying and removing precancerous growths before they ever become dangerous.

Too often, people delay screening because they feel fine. But colorectal cancer can develop silently. By the time symptoms appear, it can be much more advanced.

Fran’s story is a reminder that a simple screening can change everything.

If you are 45 or older — or have a family history of colorectal cancer — talk to your provider about scheduling a colonoscopy. Early detection saves lives.

To schedule with Washington Surgical Associates at Daviess Community Hospital, call 812-254-8856.

❤️ February is American Heart Month—a time to raise awareness, celebrate survivors, and stand together in the fight against heart disease and stroke.

Earlier this month, our DCH team joined the national movement by wearing RED in recognition of National Wear Red Day®. We wore red to be seen, to be counted, to be heard—and to make an impact.

Heart disease remains the No. 1 killer of women, but together, we can change that. Knowledge is power: learn CPR, recognize the signs, and support heart-healthy habits in your life and your community.

Today, DCH CEO Justin D. Harris, MSHA, MBA, FACHE, attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for Vincennes University's new Center for Health Sciences and Learning Innovation—an exciting milestone for healthcare education in our region.

The $33.9 million, 72,000-square-foot facility is the largest capital project in VU history. Programs in Nursing, Health Information Management, Surgical Technology, Pharmacy Technology, Physical Therapist Assistant, and Funeral Service Education will all be housed in the new building.

As DCH continues to grow our own team and services, we’re proud to support investments like this that strengthen the future of care across southern Indiana. Recently, we announced a $1.6 million annual wage investment—raising our inpatient RN pay range to $33–$45/hour and modernizing hourly rates across departments to support access and recruitment.

Together with education partners like VU, we’re building pathways to keep the next generation of healthcare professionals learning, working, and thriving right here at home.
