Second Response

Second Response Second Response stabilizes the well-being of children, families and communities exposed to trauma by restoring the mind-body capacity for resilience.

We Build Resilient Communities

When disaster strikes, SECOND RESPONSE works directly with affected children to mitigate the effects of post traumatic stress through productive play. Play defeats trauma by harmlessly releasing repressed emotions and with them stored hormones, restoring the physiology of the body to stability and balance and children to joyfulness and trust. Second Response is also actively training first responders, hospital trauma teams, teachers, parents and caregivers in its body-centered methods to remediate the effects of trauma, and providing them with strategies for self-regulation, improving disaster preparedness in our communities and around the world.

Second Response has a track record of helping children and caregivers mitigate trauma. As the current environment implores us to find new ways to offer safe, effective interactions to build resilience, we know we can change the world together -- with our own two hands.

Just how we will do that challenges us to be inventive, but our commitment remains: to serve and make a difference. We hope you will consider supporting us in the months ahead. Stay safe.

Important, easy to read article on how indirect stress can later turn into toxic stress.

"it is important to remember that biology and history are not destiny. Many of the effects of toxic stress can be reversed. The earlier toxic stress can be caught and met with a healthy response, the more effectively the healing from its effects. Relationships are key and healthy, supportive, stable ones have an extraordinary capacity to fortify people – children and adults – against the damaging effects of toxic stress. It’s the power of human connection, and it’s profound.

Stress is a normal part of life, but under certain conditions, it can turn toxic. Toxic stress isn’t so much about the cause of the stress, but about the chronic and ongoing nature of the stress.
