We’ve all been there—“just five more minutes” of scrolling on Instagram or TikTok before bed, only to find ourselves wide awake an hour later. Here’s the scoop: staying on social media and news feeds right before sleep can mess with both your mind and your sleep rhythm.

Here’s what science shows:

📱Late-night screen use suppresses the hormone melatonin, which signals to your body that it’s time to rest. The result: harder time falling asleep and less restful sleep.

📱The content matters just as much as the light—consuming alarming or negative posts triggers your stress system (hello cortisol!) and keeps your brain in “alert” mode when it should be preparing for rest.

📱The endless scroll feeds into a loop of negative content, which increases anxiety and can make you feel worse—not better—before bed.

What you can do tonight:

📱Aim to stop screen use at least 30 minutes before bed. Switch your phone off and give your mind a “cool-down” period.

📱Replace the scroll with a calming activity: reading a light book, journaling, or simply lying in bed with your eyes closed and deep-breathing.

📱Move your phone away from the bed (out of reach helps!) so the temptation disappears.

📱If you must use your phone later, switch to “night mode” or a warm-tone screen and choose something relaxing (not a news feed or endless reels).

📱Remind yourself: this isn’t about cutting off news or social entirely—it’s about protecting your pre-sleep zone so your brain and body can reset properly.

Your bed should be a place for rest, not for scrolling into distress. Tonight, give your mind the gift of pause.

Checkups and screenings are essential because they help detect health issues early—often before symptoms appear. Early detection means conditions can be treated or managed more effectively, preventing them from becoming serious or life-threatening. Regular checkups also give doctors a chance to monitor your overall health, track changes over time, and guide you in making lifestyle choices that support long-term wellness. In short, preventive care helps you stay healthier, reduces medical costs in the long run, and gives you peace of mind knowing you’re taking proactive steps for your well-being.

When was the last time you changed your bed sheets? If it’s been more than a week or two, you may want to rethink that.

Sleeping day after day in the same sheets gives you a bed that’s doing more than just holding you at night—it’s holding sweat, skin cells, allergens, even bacteria. Specialists note that these fabrics collect a surprising amount of “gunk” sooner than we might expect.

Here’s what to know:

🛌 Many dermatologists, allergists and cleaning experts recommend swapping out sheets every week to keep allergen and micro-organism build-up in check.

🛌 If you have pets in bed, suffer from allergies or asthma, sweat heavily at night, or share your bed, you might need to wash even more often (every 3-4 days in some cases).

🛌 Washing in the hottest water that your sheets can tolerate helps remove dust mites and bacteria.

Helpful Tips:

🛌 Keep an extra set of sheets handy so you can flip them quickly without feeling overwhelmed.

🛌 Make it habit: pick one day each week (e.g., Sunday night) for “clean sheet refresh”.

🛌 Don’t forget your pillowcases—they touch your face/night oils and should ideally be cleaned weekly too.

🛌 If you sleep with pets or have had an illness, wash sheets immediately after those nights.

🛌 Use bedding made of breathable, washable fabrics (cotton and linen are good choices) to help minimize moisture and allergen build-up.

Making your bed fresh and clean each week isn’t just about comfort—it’s about creating a healthier, more restful environment for you and your body.

Think about all the places your shoes have been today — sidewalks, public buildings, maybe even a restroom floor. Every time you slip them onto your floors, you’re bringing in more than just dirt. According to the Cleveland Clinic, “most shoes have millions of bacteria on them” and can carry serious germs like Escherichia coli (E. coli), Clostridioides difficile (C. diff), or even Methicillin‑resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) into your home.

Here’s why kicking off your outdoor shoes at the door is a smart move:

👟You reduce the risk of tracking bacteria, allergens and even lead dust into your space.

👟If you have kids crawling around or someone with a weaker immune system, every bit of reduction in unwanted microbes helps.

👟Your floors stay cleaner for longer (and you save some time on scrubbing).

It’s a simple habit that helps turn your home into a calmer, cleaner zone.

What you can do:

👟Place a shoe rack or mat by your front door with a “shoes off” reminder.

👟Consider having indoor-only slippers or shoes for everyone in the house.

👟If you’ve been in a super messy area (mud, heavy traffic, construction), give your shoes a quick outside rinse or wipe this evening.

Let guests know your “no shoes inside” policy in advance (so they don’t feel caught off guard).

When cleaning, focus on entry zones and high-traffic areas — that’s where most tracked-in debris lands.

Your home is more than just your space — it’s your sanctuary. Let the world stay outside until you’re ready for it.

Smoking doesn’t just affect your lungs — it affects your vision, too. The toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke enter the bloodstream and restrict tiny blood vessels in the eyes, leading to inflammation and long-term damage to the retina and optic nerve. These changes can increase your risk for glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, all of which can cause irreversible vision loss.

What’s more, even after quitting, the fine blood vessels in your eyes may remain constricted, leaving lingering effects. Secondhand smoke and even touching your eyes after handling ci******es can irritate the surface, cause dryness, and contribute to further eye problems.

E-ci******es and va**ng aren’t harmless either — studies show they can increase oxidative stress and inflammation in the eyes, raising the risk for dryness and irritation.

If you’ve ever smoked, it’s important to get regular eye exams and support your eye health with antioxidant-rich foods like leafy greens and fish. Quitting smoking at any age can significantly lower your risk of serious eye diseases and protect your vision for years to come.

Your eyesight is precious — take steps to protect it today. Schedule your next wellness visit with Altair Integrative Wellness by calling 907-357-1818.

The end of daylight saving time means darker evenings and shorter days—and while gaining an extra hour of sleep might sound great, it can still affect your health in surprising ways.

Disruptions to your body’s natural circadian rhythm can lead to poor sleep quality, increased stress, and higher risks of cardiovascular issues like stroke. In fact, new research suggests that switching permanently to standard time could prevent more than 300,000 strokes and 2 million obesity cases each year in the U.S.

The time shift can also affect mood, potentially increasing the risk of seasonal depression as daylight becomes scarce. To minimize these effects, try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, get regular exercise, and soak up natural sunlight in the morning. Avoid caffeine and screen time before bed to help your body adapt more easily.

Your internal clock thrives on routine—so treat this transition gently. A little extra care can help keep your sleep, mood, and heart health steady as the seasons shift.

Canned soups are quick and comforting, but they often contain high levels of sodium that can increase your blood pressure over time. When your body holds onto excess sodium, it retains more fluid—causing your heart to pump harder to circulate blood.

Even one cup of canned soup can contain around 700 mg of sodium—nearly half the recommended daily limit of 1,500 mg! And if you have sodium sensitivity, that effect can be even stronger.

If you love soup, you don’t have to give it up completely. Look for labels that say “low sodium,” “reduced sodium,” or “no salt added.” These options typically contain 5 to 500 mg of sodium per serving, making them much friendlier for your heart. Soups made with veggies, beans, or lean meats can also add fiber, iron, and vitamins that support overall health.

The key is balance—check the labels, track your sodium intake, and make small swaps where you can. Your heart will thank you later. ❤️

Sometimes, it’s the simplest things that make the biggest difference for our health. Small habits like standing after meals, getting enough sleep, or staying hydrated may seem too easy to matter, but they support the body’s natural balance and prevent bigger issues over time. We often overlook them because they don’t feel as dramatic or immediate as medicine or workouts — yet consistency in these simple actions builds lasting wellness. When we start paying attention to these “little things,” we realize how powerful everyday choices can be in keeping us healthy and energized.

Starting a wellness journey can be exciting—but also overwhelming when you’re surrounded by conflicting advice and highlight reels online. True wellness isn’t about perfection or following every trend; it’s about creating habits that support both your mind and body.

Daily movement—whether a quick stretch, a short walk, or a workout—helps reset the mind and ease stress. Beyond exercise, prioritizing quality sleep, mindful breathing, and nourishing meals plays a big role in feeling balanced and calm. Even small rituals, like massaging your feet before bed or enjoying a quiet morning meditation, can help you stay grounded.

It’s also important to protect your mental space. Avoid comparing yourself to others, and instead fill your social feed with content that inspires self-love and positivity. Remember: your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

✨ Be kinder to yourself, slow down, and celebrate the small steps. That’s where real wellness begins.
