The first successful, wearable glass contact lenses were constructed and fitted in 1888 by Swiss physician Dr. Adolf Eugen Fick. While early concepts were theorized by Leonardo da Vinci and René Descartes, Fick was the first to create functional,vision-correcting lenses, which were later improved by advancements in plastics and hydrogel.

Key Contributors to Contact Lens Development:
Adolf Fick (1888): Produced the first heavy, glass, scleral lenses that covered the entire eye.
F.A. Mueller (1887): A German glassblower who made the first physical glass lens.
Kevin Touhy (1948): Introduced the first, smaller, plastic "corneal" lens.
Otto Wichterle (1960s): Invented the first soft, hydrogel lenses.

Early lenses were uncomfortable and could only be worn for a few hours, but they paved the way for modern, breathable, soft, and rigid gas-permeable lenses.

Avoid staring at your screen for too long – your eyes need breaks too! Try the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
