Southmayd is a nonprofit residential care home for women age 60+ in Waterbury, Connecticut. It offers private rooms, daily meals served in a shared dining room, medication administration, assistance with bathing, housekeeping, laundry, and a full calendar of activities — all in a supportive, community-centered setting.

It is designed for women who are largely independent but benefit from structure, safety, and daily support. It is also an option for families who want affordability, transparency, and a licensed alternative to franchise assisted living.

Southmayd’s Foundation subsidizes a significant portion of the true cost of care, making it a rare and financially accessible model of residential living.

We’re expecting significant snow and strong winds. Storms like this can be especially challenging for older neighbors and loved ones. A quick check-in can make a real difference.

If you’re preparing, consider:

• Picking up extra groceries or prescriptions for them
• Confirming they have working heat, electricity, and charged phones
• Making sure flashlights, batteries, and blankets are easy to access
• Bringing over a few ready-to-heat meals
• Clearing walkways and not letting them shovel
• Checking that carbon monoxide detectors are working
• Helping them set up a plan in case power goes out

Sometimes safety is simply knowing someone is paying

Stay safe, Waterbury. And please check in on the people who may not ask for help. 💛

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women — and risk increases with age. That makes heart health especially important in the later chapters of life.

Simple, consistent habits matter: regular movement, balanced meals, staying socially connected, and having a daily routine that supports both physical and emotional well-being. These aren’t quick fixes, they’re the foundations of long-term health.

At Southmayd, heart health is woven quietly into daily life. Gentle exercise and movement, nutritious home-cooked meals, shared dining, and opportunities for connection are part of the rhythm here and the support that makes healthy choices easier to maintain.
