“Every woman should have a suitable place to live.”
— Sarah Donaldson, Founder of Southmayd Home, 1898

With $10 and unshakeable conviction, Sarah Donaldson didn’t just dream of a better world for women, she built one.

When her dear friend was forced to leave Waterbury simply because no suitable home existed for her, Sarah refused to accept it. She opened a bank account, rallied 99 women to her cause, and gave every spare moment to turning her vision into reality.

On September 26, 1898, Southmayd Home welcomed its very first resident; an elderly blind woman who simply wanted to stay in the city she loved.

Sarah led with grace and purpose for over a decade, leaving behind not just a building, but a movement rooted in dignity, community, and care. She passed away in 1916 at the age of 83, the same year the Board laid plans for the beautiful home on Columbia Boulevard that still stands today.

127 years later, her words still ring true.

💐 Happy Women’s History Month 💐

We’re expecting significant snow and strong winds. Storms like this can be especially challenging for older neighbors and loved ones. A quick check-in can make a real difference.

If you’re preparing, consider:

• Picking up extra groceries or prescriptions for them
• Confirming they have working heat, electricity, and charged phones
• Making sure flashlights, batteries, and blankets are easy to access
• Bringing over a few ready-to-heat meals
• Clearing walkways and not letting them shovel
• Checking that carbon monoxide detectors are working
• Helping them set up a plan in case power goes out

Sometimes safety is simply knowing someone is paying

Stay safe, Waterbury. And please check in on the people who may not ask for help. 💛
