In 1948, at the request of Archbishop Edward Mooney, the Dominican Sisters of Oxford began caring for the elderly in their previous motherhouse nestled along the shores of Scott Lake – a stunning location reflecting the beauty of God’s creation. Today, more than 60 years later, Lourdes Senior Community, a non-profit, continuing care retirement community, has grown into a neighborhood of 250 seniors living in four distinct residences. Fox Manor offers independent living, Mendelson Home provides assisted living, Clausen Manor cares for those living with dementia and Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center offers long-term care and a rehabilitation center. Lourdes Senior Community has a long history of quality healthcare services and programs. In 2013, the Lourdes Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center was named one of the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report magazine, and the overall community was selected Best of the Best for senior living for the sixth year in a row by readers of the Oakland Press, a suburban Detroit daily newspaper. In addition, Clausen Manor and the Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center previously received Michigan Governor Care Awards, and each year our facilities pass state surveys with exemplary records.

Last night, we were honored to welcome nearly 60 guests to our Senior Care Planning Expo - an evening dedicated to education, preparation, and peace of mind.

At Lourdes, we are committed to providing residents, staff, families, and our greater community with the tools and resources they may need as they navigate retirement, senior living, and end-of-life care.

Events like this are one way we live that mission.

A special thank you to Dahring | Cusmano Investment Professionals, who covered a wide range of important topics older adults may face, including tax law changes on investments, beneficiary planning, long-term care insurance, and navigating complex financial decisions.

They also generously provided delicious desserts (brownies, cookies, apple fritters) along with coffee, tea, and water, which made the evening even more welcoming.

We were also grateful to have Andrea with Century 21 available to answer questions about selling a home in retirement - whether your own or a parent’s - and Cathy from Angela Hospice to offer guidance on considerations surrounding hospice care.

We received many compliments throughout the evening and were told the information shared was both helpful and informative.

Guests had the opportunity to ask personalized questions, and we know several left feeling more confident and better equipped to navigate future decisions.

This expo, and others like it, are part of an ongoing initiative at Lourdes to ensure our community has access to the knowledge and support needed to experience compassionate care, dignity, and respect at every stage of the retirement journey.

We are grateful to all who attended and to the professionals who made the evening possible.

At Clausen Manor Memory Care, safety and dignity go hand in hand.

That’s why we use SafelyYou technology, an innovative fall detection and response system designed specifically for memory care communities. This system helps our team respond quickly when a fall occurs and provides valuable insights to help reduce future risk.

It’s one more way we combine compassionate care with advanced support — so families can have peace of mind.

Come see how Clausen Manor blends safety, comfort, and connection in a beautiful lakefront setting.

🌞 It’s another beautiful Monday! 🌞 Let’s start the week with this playful reminder from Judith Regan: “The key to successful aging is to pay as little attention to it as possible.” 🌸

Aging doesn’t have to be something we focus on or worry about—it’s just another part of life’s journey. The real secret is to stay engaged in what brings us joy, passion, and purpose, no matter the number of candles on the cake. When we shift our attention to the things that truly matter - family, friends, creativity, and new experiences - age becomes just a number.

Here at Lourdes, we celebrate the spirit of living fully at every stage of life. Let’s embrace each day with energy and focus on the things that make us feel alive. This week, instead of thinking about aging, let’s think about all the adventures still waiting for us! 🌟💖

🌟 Exciting Activities at Lourdes Rehab and Healthcare! 🌟

We’ve had a delightful month filled with love and creativity! Here’s a peek into our wonderful activities:

🎩 First, we hosted a charming “Pamper with Love” social, where residents enjoyed hot tea and scones while donning fun hats and feather boas as gifts! The floral backdrop made for perfect photos!

🎨 We were also thrilled to welcome students from Waterford Kettering High School, who brought joy through arts and crafts and a lively game of Name That Tune! Everyone had a blast!

❤️ Our Love Day Tea Party was a hit with heart-shaped bacon grilled cheeses, fresh fruit, iced tea, and mini cupcakes, such a delicious treat!

🎶 And finally, the fabulous D&A DUO serenaded us with love songs, while residents savored freshly baked heart-shaped cookies paired with their favorite drinks featuring pink or red sugared rims. The special touch? Handmade cards from Clarkston Junior High students for each resident!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to these beautiful moments! We cherish the love and laughter shared in our community! 💖

Yesterday, our Lourdes family said goodbye to someone very dear to us.

Fern, who called Lourdes home for 15 years, passed away at the age of 102. She was loved by many, and her life and memory are treasures we will always carry with us.

Fern was more than a resident. In many ways, she was the very thread of this community.

She gave her time generously by serving on committees, helping with mailings, assisting at reception, and bringing the sacrament to fellow residents.

She was often the first to volunteer and was always ready to lend a hand wherever she was needed.

But what made Fern so unforgettable was her heart. She had a deep love for people and an equally deep love for life. She was never afraid to participate, to try something new, to be silly, to dress up, to dance, or to laugh out loud.

She lived to be 102, yet she lived as if each day were a gift not to be wasted. Fear and the opinions of others never kept her from embracing the moment.

Through her contagious smile and zest for life, she encouraged the rest of us to do the same.

Fern showed us what true strength looks like. She showed us what generosity looks like. She showed us what joy looks like.

She loved deeply and freely, and in doing so, she gathered many adopted children and grandchildren within these walls. To so many of us, she was not simply part of Lourdes. She was family.

Fern, we trust you are singing with the angels now and keeping watch over all of us. We will miss you deeply, and the lessons you taught us about courage, charity, and joy will remain woven into this community. Much love, dear friend. Until we meet again…

So much of what truly matters in life can’t be measured or planned—it’s found in a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, or a simple moment of care. These small gestures may seem ordinary, yet they hold the power to comfort, uplift, and change a life in ways we may never fully see. As we begin this week, may we be mindful of the impact our everyday kindness can have on those around us. 💙

Lourdes Senior Community has a longstanding legacy, built on the vision of many, including a few inspiring women!

Sister Benedicta Becks, OP was the first Administrator assigned to Lourdes Nursing Home in 1965.

Sister Benedicta grew up in a family of 11 children.

Her parents came to America from Slovakia & eventually settled in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Their family later moved to Detroit.

Sister Benedicta was the sixth daughter & was named Rose Frances.

She attended both public & parochial schools and joined the Dominican Sisters of Oxford.

She graduated from Marygrove College & studied at a number of other universities in Michigan, including: The University of Michigan & Michigan State University.

Sister Benedicta set about solving problems inherent in the opening of a new senior facility: building a staff of nurses & aides; establishing accounting, & other business procedures.

She set the standard for patient care, creating the foundation for Lourdes’ mission.

Sister Benedicta created the first Lourdes Board. Together they built a community of care for seniors and their families.

Although Lourdes had a waiting list from the beginning, it took some time to reach full capacity because of delays in the intake procedure and lack of adequate staff to care for bedridden residents.

Sister Benedicta recognized the need for core volunteers who could assist the staff and add to the overall quality of care.

Sister Benedicta also cared greatly for the people she hired. While she was firm and efficient, she supported her staff, including their dreams and ambitions.

She encouraged staff to go to school. She even provided financial support if they chose to go to school.

Sister Benedicta’s tenure as Administrator ended in 1981 after sixteen years of service to Lourdes.
She returned to the Dominican Sisters of Peace (then the Dominican Sisters of Oxford) to live in their community.

She continued to teach and take care of the elderly until she passed on November 26, 2010.

Sister Benedicta is best remembered today as a savvy business woman whose cunning strategy and determination built the foundation of Lourdes legacy.

When we were children, friendship came easily. We met someone new, started playing, and a bond was formed.

As we grow older, friendships can be harder to maintain, shaped by life’s responsibilities, distance, and loss.

In our senior years especially, many of the relationships we once held dear may no longer be with us. That makes the friends who remain, and the new friendships we form, extraordinarily precious.

Today, we’re reminded that friendship is one of life’s greatest gifts, to be cherished at every stage of life. 💙

February is National Heart Month, a time to focus on caring for one of the most important muscles in our bodies: our hearts.

As we age, heart health becomes even more important, but small, consistent habits can make a big difference:

❤️ Stay active – Gentle movement like walking, stretching, chair exercises, or balance classes helps keep the heart strong.
❤️ Eat heart-healthy foods – Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats support cardiovascular health.
❤️ Stay socially connected – Spending time with friends, playing cards, enjoying music, or sharing a laugh can reduce stress and support heart health.
❤️ Manage stress – Deep breathing, prayer, meditation, music, and quiet moments can help calm the heart and mind.
❤️ Keep learning – Staying mentally engaged supports overall wellness, including heart health.

At Lourdes Senior Community, we believe heart health goes beyond physical care. It includes emotional, social, and spiritual well-being too. From group activities and exercise opportunities to shared meals and meaningful connections, we’re committed to supporting healthy hearts at every stage of life.

This Heart Month, take a moment to do something kind for your heart. You deserve it. 💖

It’s ! And today we are continuing the story of Lourdes!

So here’s a fun fact:

The Archdiocese of Detroit broke ground on Lourdes Nursing Home February 11, 1964 and dedicated by Archbishop John F. Dearden on Saturday, May 1, 1965.

Following the ceremony, an open house was held to enable the people of the Archdiocese to inspect the facility.

Visitors found an attractive one-story building in a beautiful setting overlooking Scott Lake.
Nearby was the former Menscola Convalescent Home, which would now be used as a convent for the

Sisters assigned to the nursing home.

The triple wings of the building contained private, semi-private and rooms for couples.

Each room had a connecting lavatory.

Interspersed among the rooms were large, bright lounges, some equipped with televisions and others with dining facilities for patients unable to go to the main dining room.

There were X-ray and dental care centers, occupational and physical therapy centers, laundry facilities, a barber/beauty shop, and a hydrotherapy unit.

In the common area of the building, near the main entrance, were the patient’s dining room, a beautiful Chapel, and a spacious visitors’ lounge.

The full basement under the building provided space for meeting rooms and storage.

At the center of the building was a completely enclosed courtyard with trees, shrubs and spring flowers.

This afforded a secure haven where ambulatory patients could enjoy the outdoors, feed the birds and watch the squirrels.
