Toenails will often become thick as you age. Thickening may also occur as a result of trauma to the toenail, like repeatedly rubbing against a shoe. Sometimes when something is dropped on the toenail, the nail will fall off. When a new toenail grows back, it will often be thicker. Nail fungus (onychomycosis), psoriasis and hypothyroidism are also causes. If you have problems with thick toenails, consult a foot and ankle surgeon for proper diagnosis and treatment.

People living with diabetes are more susceptible to foot problems during hot and humid weather. Because of impaired nerve sensation, just a few minutes of walking barefoot on a hot driveway or sidewalk to fetch the newspaper can badly burn the bottom of your feet. Feet can also swell and cause friction in shoes resulting in blisters. If you’re living with diabetes, don’t take a vacation from caring for your feet this summer.
