Last night at 17:32, the Waterford Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire on Colonial Drive. Truck 15 was the first unit to arrive on scene arriving within just a couple of minutes. Truck 15 encountered heavy smoke coming from the building and fire in the basement back right corner. Our members on Truck 15 stretched a hose line and made a quick and aggressive attack on the fire. All the occupants of the home were out and accounted for on our arrival. Unfortunately, one of the residents were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, and one cat did perish in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Waterford Fire Marshals office. Thank you to our mutual aid partners for their assistance, New London Firefighters, IAFF Local 1522, Poquonnock Bridge Professional Firefighters Local 2704

The Waterford Firefighters Union extends our deepest condolences to the Goshen Fire Department and the family of Past Chief and Life Member Thomas Dembek.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Past Chief and life member, Thomas Dembek. Tom joined the fire department in 1969 and has been an active member ever since. Tom was dedicated to the town's emergency services in multiple ways. The majority of the time, Tom was the first person to arrive at an emergency in the Goshen district. He was a leader for many firemen, junior members and social members. He was a true fireman’s fireman.

Over his time in our department, he served in every rank. Tom was a member of the executive board for many years, always focusing on what he could do to make our firehouse a better place. Beyond our small firehouse, he was a member of the town’s RTM for many years, the emergency management committee, the radio committee and more.

Tom was a pillar in our community. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.

We ask that you keep Tom’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

Last night at the Waterford RTM meeting, the proposed new firehouse was front and center. what truly stood out was the engagement. The questions, comments, and concerns went well beyond just the new station. They reflected the community’s deep care for firefighter safety and responsible public investment.

Some of the highlights:

· Several members asked about maintenance and upkeep of our existing stations. The new building is important, but the ongoing health of all stations cannot be overlooked.

· Others raised comparisons of firefighter pay in Waterford vs. neighboring departments. Many pointed out that to retain experienced personnel and attract new talent, we must remain competitive.

· Safety and proper staffing levels were recurring themes. Voices expressed concern about what happens when shifts are short staffed or stretched too thin, and the importance of ensuring every shift has adequate coverage.

This shows us our elected officials are listening. They care deeply about the People who serve, and about ensuring public safety in every corner of town. Their willingness to address tough issues like facilities, staffing, and pay, shows true partnership.

We’re grateful for that. And as we move toward the elections, we look forward to continuing to work with the officials who stand with us, who care about firefighter safety, and who value the trust the public places in us every day.
