Sheila Hollingsworth, a Focus on Diabetes volunteer and longtime supporter was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2025. She will undergo a double lumpectomy this month. We ask that you keep Sheila and her family in your prayers as we navigate all the things. We are believing God for complete healing of cancer and restore peace.

Focus on Diabetes is proud to be leading a statewide prostate cancer research initiative. Did you know that the Focus on Diabetes leadership team serves on a committee that analyzes local cancer data in Black Hawk County?

Breast Cancer has the 99% survival rate when diagnosed at stage 1.
Prostate Cancer has an almost 100% survival rate when diagosed at state 1.

The Focus on Diabetes leadership team are career healthcare professionals with an indepth knowledge of patient care and hospital procedures. That is an advantage in community outreach and education.

Seventeen House Republicans, including Zach Nunn, the only representative from Iowa, joined Democrats on Thursday to move a measure to the Senate that would extend the Affordable Care Act and lower health insurances costs for more than 20 million Americans for three years.

Congratulations to the empower me youth leadership and development team that advocated for the Hands-Free Driving law. Legislators had been working on this since 2019 and was successful in getting it passing in 2025 with the help of the empower me team!

Iowa's hands-free driving law (Iowa Code 321.276) makes it a moving violation, with fines starting January 1, 2026: a $100 fine for a standard violation, escalating to $500 if it causes injury, and $1,000 if it causes death, plus potential license suspension for serious incidents, requiring only single-touch or voice-activated use of devices.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in men. If the current trend continues prostate cancer will be the highest new diagnosis of cancer in the State of Iowa. Focus on Diabetes is leading a statewide prostate cancer research project to help educate men on cancer risk and family health history.
