About 178,000 people die from excessive drinking each year. That’s 488 deaths per day, making alcohol a leading cause of preventable death in the United States. To save lives, communities can use effective strategies like regulating the number of stores that sell alcohol, updating alcohol taxes, and limiting the number of hours alcohol is sold. States that implement policies to reduce alcohol availability, affordability, and advertising can reduce the number of people who die from excessive alcohol use.
