There’s been a lot of discussion circulating about Tixel, and we want to take a moment to share accurate, educational information about this treatment and why we recommend it for certain patients.
Introducing Tixel® — an FDA-cleared treatment designed to help patients with Evaporative Dry Eye caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
What is MGD?
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction occurs when the oil-producing glands in the eyelids become blocked or impaired. This may be associated with:
Rosacea
Diabetes
Autoimmune diseases (such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis)
Thyroid disorders
Aging
Hormonal changes (including menopause)
Reduced blinking from prolonged screen time
Inflammation (including blepharitis)
Certain medications
Environmental factors (dry air, smoke, wind)
Poor eye makeup hygiene
When these glands don’t function properly, the oil layer of the tear film becomes poor in quality, leading to dryness, irritation, burning, or fluctuating vision. Importantly, over 50% of patients with MGD may not experience noticeable dry eye symptoms, even while gland damage is progressing.
How Tixel helps:
Tixel delivers controlled heat and gentle pressure to the eyelids, helping restore meibomian gland function. Each treatment takes about 2 minutes per eye, making it quick, comfortable, and effective.
