Happy Earth Day from Pathfinder!

The future of our planet depends on the leadership, vision, and action of young people today. Through our Youth Champions for Climate Resilience project, youth across West Africa are stepping up and leading efforts to protect their communities and build a more sustainable future.

Youth climate champions in Burkina Faso are a powerful example of this work in action. Watch their story and see how youth are shaping the future of our Earth.

Next week, the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026 convenes under the theme "Reimagining Africa's Health Systems: Innovation, Integration, and Interdependence"—bringing together leaders, innovators, and changemakers at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Our delegation will be actively engaged across sessions on SRHR, climate-health linkages, gender equity, and global health diplomacy. We would love to connect at the summit—whether to explore partnership opportunities, share implementation experience, or simply exchange ideas across the thematic areas where our work converges.

In Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory, parents and caregivers have become vital catalysts for improving reproductive health outcomes for adolescents and youth.

Through the Empowering Futures project, funded by Organon, parents, caregivers, and their children are coming together to form "dynamic duos" to reinforce learnings about health, financial literacy, goal setting, effective communication, and more. After adolescents participate in peer mentorship sessions, they work with their parent or caregiver to apply these new skills at home through a "duo activity."

See how the Dynamic Duo Accountability Partner Model fosters a robust feedback loop that builds confidence and amplifies collective learning in our new brief: https://bit.ly/4tg6dth

Developed as a component of the Empowering Futures project’s peer mentorship curriculum, the Dynamic Duo Accountability Partner Model is an innovative

Pathfinder has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with Jade Textile, reinforcing our shared commitment to women’s empowerment and workplace well-being. Jade Textile is a major textile supplier for sportswear brands including Lacoste, Nike, and Tommy Hilfiger. This partnership reflects our ongoing efforts to collaborate with the private sector, creating safer, more inclusive, and supportive work environments that benefit employees, their families, and the wider community.

Through this collaboration, Pathfinder will work with Jade Textile to implement integrated women’s economic and social empowerment activities across the company’s factories in 10th of Ramadan City, Ismailia, and Alexandria. These initiatives aim to strengthen gender equality, build leadership capacity, enhance employee well-being, and foster sustainable community impact.

Partnerships like this one demonstrate how cross-sector collaboration can drive lasting, positive change for workplaces and communities alike.

Did you know we are contributing to climate-resilient healthcare systems through our “Green Clinics” model?

Green clinics are powered by solar energy, eliminate toxic materials, and use sustainable waste systems while offering quality care that tackles challenges at the intersection of climate, disease, and nutrition.

But we know that climate resilience can’t be built without engaging communities. In the same communities served by the Green Clinics, we work with women to lead green initiatives, drive climate-smart practices, and launch sustainable businesses, improving lives and ecosystems.

Born in , this approach is being adapted to other contexts and countries!

Just over a dozen medical doctors serve an estimated population of 9 million in Kaduna state, Nigeria.

This World Health Worker Week, we are calling attention to the amazing Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) in Kaduna, , who are taking on many of the health care tasks historically reserved for medical doctors and nurse midwives. Shifting tasks to CHEWs is supported through the government’s national task-shifting and task-sharing policy.

Pathfinder’s team in Nigeria is helping to implement the national policy by mentoring and coaching CHEWs at 77 health facilities.

Through the mentorship experience, CHEWs tell us they are feeling increasingly competent at managing labor and delivery complications, like postpartum hemorrhage, and are saving lives every day.

“Before I was scared when I saw complications during delivery. Now, I know what to do. I can act quickly and save lives,” said Rafiatu Ibrahim, one of the CHEWs.

This week and every week, let’s continue to strengthen mechanisms to support the wellbeing of the health workforce so they are able to continually deliver high-quality care.

To truly build resilience in the face of the climate crisis, we must shift the power dynamics: from top-down interventions to community-led transformation—with women leading the way.

In this edition of our Country-Led in Action newsletter, our Sumaira Ishfaq demonstrates how Pathfinder's Toolkit for Applying a Gender-Transformative Approach to Women-Led Climate Resilience offers a roadmap for moving beyond "gender-sensitive" programming toward "gender-transformative" outcomes that are designed, implemented, and sustained by local communities.

After six months of implementation, early results from the programme are showing the difference already being made!

In partnership with our consortium members—BaylorUganda, Communication for Development Foundation Uganda, Uganda Youth and Adolescent Health Forum, and Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Uganda—and with guidance from the Ministry of Health and the UK in Uganda, the programme is contributing to improved access to reproductive health services:

⭐ 355 maternal deaths averted
⭐ 52,423 unsafe abortions averted
⭐ 230,186 unintended pregnancies averted
⭐ 478,303 Couple Years Protection delivered

Behind every number is a person whose life has changed.

We remain committed to building on this momentum and sustaining impact where it matters most.

The time it takes a pregnant woman to reach a hospital during an emergency is often the difference between life and death.

In Tanzania, we launched the m-mama program in 2013 with Vodafone Foundation, Touch Foundation, and close partnership with the Tanzanian government. m-mama created a "911 system" that connects families to a nurse dispatcher, who in turn, identifies a taxi ambulance to transport pregnant women in distress.

Since 2013, m-mama has responded to more than 125,000 emergencies and is estimated to have saved over 5,000 lives.

Tanzania officially adopted m-mama as its national maternal emergency transportation system, and in September 2023, the program achieved full national scale, now serving all 63 million Tanzanians and projected to transport 50,000 women and newborns annually.

This is a powerful reminder that coordinating and strengthening existing resources and systems can significantly improve health outcomes and save lives.

When labor becomes life-threatening in rural Tanzania, minutes matter. The m-mama program uses mobile technology and community drivers to get mothers and newborns to hospitals—and it now serves all 63 million Tanzanians.
