In Kourfey, Niger, a problem was weighing heavily on Moussa Tahirou. As a teacher, he noticed that many of the young girls enrolled in primary school would suddenly disappear from the education system. The reason was almost always the same: early marriage.

“I realized that girls’ education was seriously threatened in my community, and that this was jeopardizing not only their future, but also that of the entire community,” said Moussa.

Unable to stay silent any longer, Moussa mobilized young people around him and formed the Association of Young People for Sustainable Development in Kourfey (AJEDDUK) to drive community action in favor of health, education, and sustainable development. In 2024, AJEDDUK joined Pathfinder's J-Matassa project, which seeks to reduce early marriage, unwanted pregnancies, and maternal mortality and strengthen women and young people’s financial autonomy.

With training from J-Matassa, Moussa has reached 51,718 people across 340 villages and rallied support from the government, village chiefs, religious leaders, health workers, school principals, and women’s groups.

Our Senior Country Director, Dr. Joseph Komwihangiro, sat down with The Guardian Tanzania and Daily News Tanzania to share why investing in women's health is one of the smartest economic decisions a country can make.

From the conversation: "Closing the women's health gap could inject $1 trillion annually into the global economy. Women reinvest up to 90% of their income into families and communities. Women's health is infrastructure, not separate from economic development - it's foundational to it."

Joseph discusses Pathfinder's work in Tanzania, the recently launched project addressing FGM, and how we build sustainable models beyond donor dependency.

In a new op-ed published in The EastAfrican, our CEO, Dr. Tabinda Sarosh, reflects on her recent visit to Tanzania and a critical question facing the development sector: Are we building systems that last, or temporary fixes that collapse when funding ends?

From the piece: "Over seven decades, Pathfinder has worked alongside governments, communities, and local partners. We've responded to what women and girls consistently say they need: access to care, protection from violence, and the ability to make decisions about their bodies and futures. The results are real: lives saved, pregnancies planned, health systems strengthened.

But we've reached a plateau where 'more of the same' won't get us to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Wherever health gains aren't paired with real economic power and local ownership, they remain fragile."

Dr. Sarosh explores the shift toward new models where women co-design and own solutions. The evolution required, she writes, is fundamentally about humility: moving from models where success depends on external funding to models that sustain beyond donor cycles.

Our CEO, Dr. Tabinda Sarosh, recently visited our teams and partners in Tanzania. While in Morogoro, she met a dedicated taxi ambulance driver, part of the m-mama digitized emergency transport system, and a mother who reached urgent care just in time thanks to this life-saving connection.

Through m-mama, local taxis are digitally tracked and pregnant women with emergencies are transported directly to government health facilities for immediate care.

Since 2023, m-mama has responded to 10,500+ emergencies.

Pathfinder has been part of the m-mama partnership model in Tanzania.
