What's it like to be a patient in a DPC clinic? The following is an example of an actual patient encounter that happened today at Classic DPC. There is no identifying information here, but the story is told with the permission of the patient involved...
About 5pm: a patient texted with chest discomfort that concerned her. She had plans to leave on a long road trip the next day, and was worried about leaving with these symptoms. I called her to make sure this wasn't a medical emergency, and we both agreed that it wasn't. I asked her if she could come the next morning at 7:45am for an evaluation.
Next day, 7:45am: I see her in clinic, perform a history and physical exam, and perform an EKG in clinic. After discussion, we agree that a heart echocardiogram is warranted, but we also didn't want to delay her trip unnecessarily...
A heart echocardiogram is arranged for 10:15 that same day. I have the results by noon, and I call her and tell her that everything is normal, and that I hope she has a great trip. She is able to leave for her road trip on time.
Less than 20 hours between initial contact and a complete evaluation including diagnostic studies and interpretation. So how much did this cost her?
After hours access to her doctor: $0 (included with membership)
Urgent visit the next day: $0 (included with membership)
EKG with interpretation: $0 (included with membership)
Her echocardiogram was arranged through her insurance coverage, which means her only cost was the copay associated with the heart echocardiogram.
Leaving for vacation with peace of mind: priceless ๐
