“Do hearing aids actually help prevent cognitive decline?”

The answer, more and more, is yes, especially if they’re used early.

In fact, a major 2023 study found that using hearing aids was linked to a 48% lower risk of developing dementia in adults with hearing loss. (Source: Lin et al., Lancet Commission, 2023)

That’s a powerful reason to start thinking about hearing health! Can you think of anyone that has been putting off their hearing test?

An audiogram is a simple graph that shows how well you hear different pitches, from low (like a drum) to high (like a bird).

On your chart, you’ll see “O” symbols for your right ear and “X” symbols for your left ear. Our audiologists will walk you through exactly what those marks mean and how they relate to the sounds you hear every day, like speech, music, and background noise.

Think of it like a printed prescription for glasses, but for your ears!

Your audiogram becomes the baseline we compare future tests to, so we can track any changes in your hearing over time.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we reflect on the power of communication, understanding, and empathy.

Dr. King reminded us that change begins when we listen to one another. At Athens Oconee Audiology, we are proud to help people connect more fully with the world and with each other, honoring his legacy through service and care.

“I saw hearing aids on the shelf at the pharmacy… is that an option for me?”

🦻Many patients come into our clinic genuinely curious about over-the-counter (OTC) hearing devices.

OTC hearing aids are designed for adults over 18 with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. For some people, they can be an appropriate starting point.

That said, they aren’t always the best solution.

OTC devices are self-fitting, which means there’s a lot of guessing involved…
đź‘‚ Guessing about the type of hearing loss
đź’» Guessing about the correct settings
🩺 Guessing whether something more medically treatable is being missed

And when we guess, hearing outcomes often fall short of what’s possible.

🔍 Our role is to help you understand why you’re having difficulty hearing and guide you toward the solution that truly fits your ears, your lifestyle, and your goals, whether that includes OTC devices or something else.

If you’re wondering where to begin on your hearing journey, please contact us. We’re here to walk alongside you and help you make confident, informed decisions about your hearing. 👂

Here’s something many people don’t realize: hearing loss and cognitive decline may actually share a common cause.

Things like aging, oxidative stress, or changes in brain structure can affect both hearing and brain function at the same time.

This is known as the Co-Morbidity Theory, and it’s one of the reasons we look at the whole picture when we assess your hearing.

Brain scans show that adults with hearing loss experience faster rates of brain shrinkage, especially in areas tied to memory and speech processing. (Source: Peelle et al., 2011)

Caring for your hearing is one step toward protecting your brain health, too. Schedule a hearing check up today!

Ever feel totally wiped out after a long conversation, especially in a noisy place?

You’re not imagining it.

When your brain works harder to make up for hearing loss, it can use up energy meant for other tasks, like memory or focus.

This idea is called Cognitive Load Theory, and it helps explain why untreated hearing loss can affect more than just your ears.

Research from Johns Hopkins found that people with hearing loss are up to 5 times more likely to develop dementia if they don’t treat it. (Source: Lin et al., 2011)

Does listening feel exhausting? It might be time for a hearing check.
