Grief is a process that people experience after a loss. Hurricane Melissa, left Jamaicans 🇯🇲 with numerous losses.
💥It is imperative that each person process the loss in a healthy way.
💥The timeframe of individuals grieving is different for each person.
💥There is not a specific way for grief to look or feel.
💥The critical point is NOT to avoid the grieving process.

✨Going to therapy does not take away from a person’s belief in God.
✨Faith and therapy for many go hand in hard.
✨It is not a weakness to go to therapy or a lack of faith. Instead it is the opposite, it takes strength to go to therapy and do all it requires. It takes faith to believe that going to therapy will help because you believe in yourself; the God in you, to process and heal.

Never underestimate the power of asking someone, how are you feeling? What are you thinking? (Or even how are you thinking? 🤭.. since that is how I asked in the video).
💥Don’t assume to know. Don’t anticipate the response from these questions. Instead, wait for the response. Then, be there for the person as that person needs in the capacity you are able.
💥Experiences are felt and thought about differently by each person.
💥Even similar thoughts and feelings are processed differently by each person.

Children learn how to manage their emotions from following what they see adults do and from being purposefully taught by adults around them.
Teach your children how to regulate their feelings and their thoughts by:
✨Listening to how they are feeling and thinking.
✨Do not dismiss any feelings and thoughts they share. Instead ensure they know you hear them. This is how you VALIDATE.
✨Share with them how you are feeling and thinking in an age appropriate manner. This helps them to feel understood. Again, Validated.
✨Help them to balance feelings and thoughts that are overwhelmingly negative with adding a positive. Not invalidating BUT instead teaching them how to manage and balance their feelings and thoughts using hope and gratitude.

Being intentional about using a healthy method to process thoughts and feelings you cannot verbalize helps to process and relieve your body of the stress, pain, anguish you are feeling.
💥Crying is therapeutic for some. If it works, do it. It is okay.
💥Find at least one way to release feelings and thoughts you cannot verbalize.
💥Prayer is a source of relief and strength for many. Pray.

A first hand experience during and after a natural disaster at any level can critically impact people’s mental and emotional health. A natural disaster at the level of Hurricane Melissa which was a category 5 when it made passage through Jamaica without question has and continues to impact the mental and emotional health of Jamaicans. What can you do families and friends?
✨Listen without judgement.
✨Do not dismiss the overwhelming negative thoughts and feelings family and friends are having .
✨Display optimism and not toxic positivity.

Have you ever considered that a person who abuses his/her partner also needs help?
💥Encourage individuals who are abusive to seek professional help to them learn better ways to expressing negative thoughts and feelings.
💥Do not make excuses for those who are abusive towards others.
💥Both men and women can be the abuser in relationships. It is not gender specific to only men.

Did you know that domestic violence not only affects the person being abused?
💥Domestic violence affects everyone living in the home where abuse is taking place.
💥Domestic violence also affects those living outside the home: family and friends of the person being abused and family and friends of the abuser.
