What an inspiring 4th annual Pedal For The Brave! 🚴‍♀️🚴

Over the weekend, 26 intrepid cyclists pedaled over 210 miles to honor firefighters, support their families in times of need, and sustain the Kristin Ciganek Schroeder Memorial Scholarship Fund to impact women pursuing a career in the fire service. These riders exemplified strength, courage, and determination through sun, rain, and rolling hills. Their collective effort raised over $20,000 to help Ignite The Spirit MKE continue assisting firefighters & 'fire families.' We are so grateful to everyone who pedaled, volunteered, sponsored, and cheered on this memorial ride. You honored Kristin's spirit and showed that community can conquer even the longest roads ahead.

We want to extend a huge thank you to our presenting sponsor Jack Daniel's, as well as Reliant Fire Apparatus, Rogers Behavioral Health, Hylux, Body Renovation Physical Therapy Brookfield, and Ben's Cycle for their generous support. This ride would not have been possible without these sponsors and all who donated. Your commitment to Ignite The Spirit MKE's mission is inspiring.

Congrats to all who made this year's Pedal another unforgettable success! 👏👏

Aging gracefully

It is NEVER too late to start an exercise regiment. ALL bodies are adaptable at ALL ages. Recently Colleen Wilkens, PT and owner of BRPT Tosa East, spent an afternoon talking to the members at Wauwatosa Senior Center discussing how the body changes with time and strategies we can use to combat aging and remain functional.

Between the benefit of Silver Sneakers (reducing or eliminating cost of gym memberships) and very low cost classes in the community (like those available at the Senior Center in Wauwatosa) there are more and more opportunities for people ages 55 and up to connect with affordable movement options.

Here are some testimonials from participants:
“I like the yoga classes at The Wauwatosa senior centers because it keeps me active and social.”

”The classes are so welcoming, the accessibility is easy, and it helps me with my flexibility and balance. I love being in my Tosa community. It also gives me a purpose to start my day.”

”The classes are invigorating and have great positive energy.”

“I like keeping social, meeting new people, and having enjoyable conversations.”

Instructor Tiffany shared, “These classes are my favorite to teach. The seniors are willing to try anything and aren’t afraid to push their limits. They’re supportive, have a great sense of humor and a they’re a fun group.”

I love being reminded that group movement allows connection and socializing. In addition to the 10 movement classes on the schedule, there are games (sheepshead, cribbage, Wii bowling, mah jongg, bridge), creative activities (water color classes, needling), Spanish classes, poetry and writer’s workshops, on site meal services, and opportunities for day trips.

Encourage your loved ones to look for opportunities in the community they reside in. I know the Senior Center in Wauwatosa has an open door… drop in, say hi, and check them out at any time!!
