As we continue highlighting the incredible volunteers and pets who support Commonheart, we are grateful to shine a spotlight on Kirsty and Rusty for the difference they make in our communities.

Motivated by her love for giving back and Rusty’s “old soul who loves everyone” personality, Kirsty began volunteering with Commonheart after seeing an ad for pet volunteers. From the moment she and her husband adopted Rusty, it was clear he had a special gift for connecting with people. Volunteering together has given them a meaningful way to serve side by side.

In the Jefferson County area, Kirsty and Rusty visit assisted living communities, spending one on one time with residents. Rusty’s calm presence brings comfort, joy, and plenty of smiles. One of Kirsty’s favorite memories is a resident sneaking Rusty pretzels during snack time - a small but heartwarming moment that perfectly captures the spirit of their visits.

Looking ahead, Kirsty hopes to continue building connections and being a source of light for those they visit. She encourages others to volunteer with their pets, sharing, “You won't regret the time you get to spend with your pet doing this kind of work.”

At Commonheart, we recognize that our caregivers are the heartbeat of our organization. Their dedication is the driving force behind our success, and we believe it is essential to pause and show our sincere gratitude for the work they do every day.

To honor our team members, Commonheart is hosting staff appreciation breakfasts across the state. We were proud to kick off our first breakfast of 2026 at The Marquardt, celebrating the individuals who go above and beyond for our community.

Cold weather brings added risks for older adults living at home. Maintaining safe heating, dressing appropriately, choosing proper footwear, and checking smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are essential steps in supporting winter safety at home.
