A clogged duct (now called ductal narrowing) happens when an area around the milk duct gets inflamed and the duct gets compressed by local swelling. This causes a painful lump to emerge and you may experience breast redness accompanied by reduced milk output.

clogged ducts may be caused by:

-Infrequent milk removal
-Oral dysfunction
-Incorrect fl**ge size
-Incorrect fl**ge size
-Waiting too long to pump
-Skipping feeds
-Compressive clothing
-Oversupply of breastmilk
-Frequent antibiotic use

Mastitis is an inflammatory process inside of your breast caused by an unresolved clogged duct. In the beginning, mastitis is not considered a bacterial infection. However, if not treated, it can easily turn into one and may require antibiotic therapy.

Symptoms of mastitis include red and swollen area in the breast, fever, fatigue and decrease in milk supply on the affected side.

Mastitis does not ALWAYS require antibiotics. Often antibiotics are given before BAIT Protocol (comment BAIT and we will send you the protocol we recommend!) is used. Antibiotics address bacterial infection - but not inflammation so mothers may experience a slight relief in mastitis symptoms from antibiotics but often don’t fully heal if the root cause is not addressed.

If you develop a fever, you typically have about 24-48 hours before antibiotics may be needed. Call your doctor if your symptoms are not improving within 24-48h of BAIT treatment. Most antibiotics are safe to take while breastfeeding.

Tongue tie update, End of week 1!

This process was a lot as an adult- stretching my new tongue and being in my mouth every 2 hours is a LOT! Babies definitely heal and they cover much quicker! Here’s an update on before and after! The floor of the mouth tension is a work in progress. Thanks Foundation Chiropractic for the chiro care and support!

Also: went ‘Rolfing’ this morning! It’s a specific type of bodywork for fascia!

Before tie release, after, sutures, and healing. It’s been a sore process, but continuing healing. Lots of thoughts since babies get this without numbing and can’t have ibuprofen.

Day 3 post release- first contracture phase- this is NOT FUN. Ibuprofen around the clock, the stretches with serrapeptase, a digestive enzyme to eat at the healing tissue to make it pliable, pulled out my first stitch! Somehow I’m making it!

Last year, my 8 year old son was diagnosed with an incomplete tongue release causing issues for him long term with speech and more. I was floored that his infant release wasn’t enough, and to think he’d need a revision meant I couldn’t put my release off any longer. Today I worked with Dr. Stafford at Bender, Kind, & Stafford Dental (Now 201 Waterfront Dental) to release my tongue and lip tie. This is so important because a huge part of lactation care is referring infants for tongue and lip tie release. Here’s to day 1 with my new lip and tongue! *graphic photos in comments!*

Have you or your child had ties released? Post your before and after photos below!
