You might be paying me, but my contract is with your horse.

He starts talking to me as soon as I lay my eyes on him. It's not that I hear his voice or see pictures projected to me. His body speaks to me. I notice the placement of his feet beneath his body, the angles and symmetry of his hooves. I take in the rhythm of his breath, the motion of his ears, the wrinkle over his eye.

As you begin to tell me his story, my eyes continue scanning over the contours of his body. The hollows and creases explain a history of imbalance in his muscles. I make a mental note to look at your saddle.

I know he travels on the forehand well before you mention that he leans on the bit. The thickened throat-latch and hypertrophied under-neck muscles have been shouting at me since I arrived. That he spooks randomly at nothing comes as no surprise to me either.

Tensegrity will absorb many physical problems as they arise, allowing bodies to do an amazing job of compensating for physical trauma, but like us, as horses get older, trauma accumulates and creates dysfunctional posture and movement patterns.

And it's not just physical damage suffered through knocks, falls and micro-tears that takes a toll. There's emotional trauma from being weaned, trapped in yards, deprived of sufficient forage, transported, “broken-in”, separated from herdmates and so on…

Chronic emotional trauma can manifest as fascial restrictions. Dehydrated fascia becomes rigid, creating a strangle hold around muscles, nerves, tendons and even organs, limiting range of motion and sending pain signals to the brain. A viscous circle is created. The body braces as if to form a protective armour against unseen threats and the nervous system remains ever ready to flee, fight or freeze.

So once you have told me his story, it is my duty that I tell you what his body said to me. Be assured - these are my observations, not accusations. He’s always been like that, you say? Well how about today we start to do something about it? Not after the show next weekend, not after the trail ride, or after the $150 jumping lesson with the coach from out of town. For the sake of your horse, it needs to be now.

I've made a promise to your horse that I will
See him
Hear him
Honor and respect him.

I promised to do all in my power to help him feel safe so he is free to become the magnificent creature I know he can be.

So before I take your money - are you with me?

Things that make me go hmmm🤔

People that have attachments to certain types of therapy, any therapy with a good foundation in science will be effective. As we are all treating the same body most of the movements and things we do to the horse are going to look similar. They have too because we are all treating a horse. No one is inventing the wheel, even the people that claim they are, are standing on the shoulders of those who came before them.

All therapist given enough time and education develop their own particular system and way of doing the work. Good therapy is studies and practiced over years. Years of trail and error of experimentation and education.
There is not one book that will give you all the information, if you want skills it requires dedication and work.

Learning is mainly done through touching lots and lots of bodies. Therapy is no different then a sport only through repletion and practice can you sharpen and improve your game. There is no short cut !

Watching someone work on video or from afar and then going and applying what you think you learned or understand can lead to negative results. Sometimes all it does it get you or the horse hurt.

Therapy is a tool, learning the application of the appropriate tool in the correct place is important. But know which tool to apply and when not to apply it is where the real mastery begins.

Information and client hoarding🤦‍♀️,people there is enough work for all of us out there! Horse these days need all the support they can get. Through educating people we can raise awareness and probably have more horses to treat then less.

Keeping people in the dark by assuming their ability to understand is limited is plain ignorant, the more educated horse owners are the healthier horse become. If you are losing clients because they are learning body work, then you need to look at what you are offering these clients. All my clients have home work, I teach all of them self sufficiency, they still have me out regularly 😉

When I don’t answer certain questions on a public forum its not because I don’t know the answer ( although no one knows it all) its because there are limitations to information I can share in a couple of sentences. My thought process is always about safety to the horse and person as many things that can be misinterpreted could go very wrong.

Boundaries are a thing that is crossed on public media regularly. So let me clarify I’m a person and this is my job. Even though I am on a mission to help horses and owner this is still my job I need to earn a lively hood. Assuming that because I share information freely I will give you a free diagnosis for our horse is just plain rude.

I am not a vet if your horse needs veterinary help get it! Therapy will only be effective if the horse is pain free. What I do is not magic, it will not make ulcers go away.

It takes a village if you are dealing with a professional who claims they are all you need or has a magic bullet walk away. You can be a jack of many trades and a master of non. We are all human and fallible , get a team to support for your horse. Everyone needs their worked checked, everyone needs additional input !

Do no harm ! I personally don’t believe that a horse should be painful and uncomfortable after therapy. They are not people they don’t understand that its better for them in the long run. Pain creates contraction and a chemical cascade that is working against any of the therapy you offered. Do less over a loner period of time and hold the results.

People get some f…. Patience !!!! Horses are not machines nature has its own clock and time scale its not written in any rehab book I promise you.

Question always question what is being done to your horse! If the professional you are dealing with is prickly about being questioned then you have a problem. Knowledge is power get it!

I’m sure there are more but thats what comes to mind over morning ☕️
