Kendell Jay “K.J.” Wessels Sr., 57, of Linden, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at home on March 23, 2026. He was born November 20, 1968, in Nashville, Tennessee. He grew up in Waverly, Tennessee. Kendell lived a life defined by courage, service, humor, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.
Kendell was the beloved son of Robert Howard Wessels and Marcia Glenn Wessels, both of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his life partner and soulmate, Tina Pauline Yoakum, who shared in his journey and the many joys of life by his side.
A man of strong character and remarkable skill, Kendell dedicated his working years as a firefighter, electrician, and maintenance technician, professions that reflected both his technical abilities and his deep desire to help others. His commitment to service extended far beyond employment; Kendell faithfully served as a volunteer firefighter throughout his lifetime, joining local departments wherever he lived. He never hesitated to respond when others were in need. From assisting with rescue and aid efforts after Hurricane Katrina, to bringing his boat to help during the Waverly flood, Kendell’s instinct was always to act, protect, and serve. His bravery and dedication were formally recognized when he received a life-saving award for rescuing a woman from a house fire — a testament to the courage that defined him.
Outside of his work, Kendell enjoyed operating heavy equipment for home projects, spending time on the river with his boat, fishing, and exploring historical sites and museums. He had a deep interest in history and loved learning about the past, often sharing what he discovered with those around him. Known for his quick wit and warm personality, Kendell had a natural ability to make people laugh and feel at ease. He was truly a joy to be around and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Above all, Kendell cherished his family. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Karli Wessels-Patterson (Christopher), Christopher Wessels, Kendell Jay Wessels Jr., and Matthew Wessels. He was a proud and devoted Paw Paw to Mckinleigh Belle Patterson, Karter Lynn Patterson, and Madalynn Quinn Patterson who has preceded him in death, He is also survived by his brother, Allen Wessels, and was preceded in death by his brother, Robert G. Wessels. Kendell is further survived by several nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom he cared for deeply.
Kendell requested that no formal funeral or memorial service be held. In accordance with his wishes, he will be cremated, and his ashes will be spread between the final resting places of his mother and father.
Kendell lived a life marked by generosity, courage, and love. He was a Paw Paw who adored his family, a father who guided with strength, and a firefighter who gave everything he had for others. His giving spirit and open heart were gifts to all who knew him. Though he is gone, the love he shared and the lives he touched will remain forever.
