Our organization's primary goal is to improve quality of life for children with disabilities and their special needs dependents by providing them with highly trained Service Dogs. A. “Moose” Brown, our founder, is a 23 year law enforcement veteran with eight of those years as a K9 Officer. He has served in three major hurricanes (Katrina ’05, Gustav ’08 and Ike ’08) doing search, rescue and recovery work. Brown has worked and trained police patrol dogs during his career both as a police officer and for the private sector. In 2013, Brown suffered an ischemic stroke that left him partially blinded and compromised his mobility. Brown is a severe diabetic who relies on his own service dog Raven to alert him of abnormal blood sugar levels and obstacles that are in his path. These animals have helped him regain a sense of normality after suffering from diabetes, anxiety, and depression. He has since advocated for improved physical and mental health resources that will assist those in need in receiving service dogs. He decided to create The Barefoot K9 Project in 2013 to fill this need for active duty military members, veterans, first responders and civilians who may have mental or physical disabilities. We provide training of Service Dogs, within the guidelines designated by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), to active duty military members and Veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder/syndrome (PTSD/PTSS), and traumatic brain injury (TBI). We will also help people with autism, epilepsy, diabetes, vision and hearing impairments and other developmental disorders as well as Firefighters, Police officers, Emergency Medical Personnel and their families.
