According to Axios, the Trump administration is preparing a new plan for Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, and it could dramatically reshape who actually gets affordable coverage.
Here’s what it would do:
• Extend ACA subsidies only for two years, creating another premium cliff right before the next election.
• Add new income limits, meaning some families who qualify today would lose help.
• Eliminate $0 premium plans, which currently protect the lowest-income Americans from going uninsured.
• Push people into cheaper, high-deductible plans, shifting more financial risk onto patients.
• Potentially add abortion-related restrictions, reigniting a fight over the Hyde Amendment.
• Expand Health Savings Accounts, a benefit that helps higher-income households far more than struggling families.
The bottom line? This isn’t a plan to strengthen the ACA, it’s a way to quietly weaken it while claiming to extend “affordability.” It raises costs for the people who need help the most, introduces new instability, and uses healthcare access as a bargaining chip.
Millions of Americans rely on predictable, stable coverage. Healthcare shouldn’t be redesigned through political brinkmanship.
