Great info from my friend Brooke in LA about these modalities & EPM! Definitely worth the read!!!
EPM: Facts, Myths & Where Therapy Fits
There’s a lot of information floating around about EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis) — and unfortunately, a lot of misinformation too. EPM cases are complex and individual. What works for one horse may not be appropriate for another. Decisions should be made in collaboration with your veterinarian and knowledgeable professionals—not based solely on your friends thoughts or social media opinions. So, let’s clear a few things up.
💊 What actually treats EPM?
✅ Fact: EPM is treated with antiprotozoal medications (such as ponazuril or diclazuril) prescribed by a veterinarian. These medications address the underlying protozoa.
⚡ MYTH: “Equiscope/Acuscope/Myopulse pulls protozoa through the bloodstream”
This is FALSE. There is no scientific evidence or physiologic mechanism that supports the idea that microcurrent therapy can move or spread protozoa in the body.
Acuscope/Myopulse does NOT:
❌ move protozoa
❌ spread EPM
❌ replace medication
❌ worsen infection
✔️ So where does Acuscope/Myopulse fit?
Acuscope/Myopulse is a supportive therapy, not a cure. When used alongside veterinary treatment, it can help SUPPORT:
👉🏼 muscle soreness and compensation
👉🏼 rebuilding strength after atrophy
👉🏼 neuromuscular communication during rehab
👉🏼 overall comfort while the nervous system recovers
🧩 The big picture — EPM recovery is a team effort:
🩺 Veterinary diagnosis
💊 Proper medication
🏋️ Thoughtful rehab & conditioning
⚡ Supportive therapies when appropriate
If you’re seeing signs like stumbling, weakness, asymmetry, or sudden muscle loss — get your vet involved early.
Here are other ways to SUPPORT your horses recovery from EPM: (alongside vet treatment)
• Structured rehab plan
• Balance & proprioception work
• Muscle rebuilding
• Supportive therapies
• Bodywork
• Proper nutrition
• Time, patience, & consistency
