Distracted driving remains one of the leading causes of crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities on Virginia roadways.

This April, during Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Virginia DMV’s Highway Safety Office is reminding drivers to stay focused behind the wheel. In 2024 alone, distracted driving contributed to 20,758 crashes, 90 lives lost, and 11,256 injuries. Alarmingly, nearly a quarter of distracted drivers took their eyes off the road.

Whether your mind wanders, your hands leave the wheel, or your eyes drift away—any distraction can have serious consequences.

Stay alert. Stay focused. Drive safely.

🚨As extreme cold and wind chills sweep through the Shenandoah Valley this weekend, it is time to hunker down and bundle up. With temperatures plunging well below freezing 🥶 wind chills can cause frostbite in as little as 15-30 minutes, so staying indoors is the safest option. Stay safe and keep warm!!🔥

Extreme Cold Warnings have been expanded to cover the Shenandoah Valley up across the eastern WV panhandle into north-central MD. Dangerously cold wind chills are likely on Sat into Sun morning behind a strong Arctic cold front.

🚨 Great advice from VDEM— for the EXTREME Cold Warning alert issued by the National Weather Service for Waynesboro, VA and surrounding areas beginning at 7:00 pm tonight until Sunday, 2/1/2026 at 1:00 pm.🥶 Stay inside and keep warm!💙

🥶 When wind chill drops, it can feel much colder than the actual temperature, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Here are a few quick tips to protect yourself:

✅ Layer Up – Wear insulated clothing, hats, gloves, and waterproof boots.
✅ Limit Exposure – Keep outdoor time short and seek shelter often.
✅ Cover Skin – Wind can bite fast; protect your face and hands.
✅ Stay Dry – Wet clothing speeds up heat loss.

If you must travel, keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. Stay informed and check local weather updates regularly.

Stay warm, stay safe, Virginia! 💙

⚠️ A great reminder from VDEM…please stay OFF the roads as much as possible and only drive when absolutely necessary! Be safe- stay inside and keep warm!🥶

🥶🛻🚕🚗TREACHEROUS Driving Conditions in the Forecast Tonight🥶🛻🚕🚗

Across a large part of the Commonwealth, temperatures will drop tonight after daytime melting of snow, ice, and sleet, causing refrozen snow and black ice in spots. Hazard levels rise near bridges and overpasses as well as daytime shaded areas. If you are in any of the affected areas, stay off the roadways. A little common sense goes a long way.

For your safety and the safety of first responders, DO NOT TRAVEL. Staying off the roads helps prevent crashes and allows emergency crews to respond to critical emergencies.
