James Robert Combs

“I’m Fine.”

James Robert Combs, affectionately known as Jim, passed away peacefully at his home in the Jonathon Creek Community on November 10, 2025, following an extended illness. Born on July 21, 1947, in Muncie, Indiana, to the late Mary Helen Franz Combs, Jim lived a life marked by joy, kindness, and an unwavering zest for living.

Jim was a beacon of warmth and laughter. His open-hearted nature and fun-loving spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He had a gift for making others feel seen, heard, and loved—transforming ordinary moments into cherished memories.

He now joins his beloved sister, Carolyn Hicks, and his mother in eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of love and a lifetime of stories that will continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew him.

Jim spent much of his career as an electrician and insurance adjuster, skills he developed through a dedicated apprenticeship after high school. But his true passion lay in the outdoors. He found joy in elk hunting—not for the trophy, but for the experience of riding through nature and spotting elk in their habitat. A “good hunt” meant seeing just one in a field, and that was enough. He loved to ride and explore, finding beauty in the everyday and meaning in the journey.

Above all, Jim was a family man. His proudest accomplishment was the deep bond he shared with his loved ones. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Donna Marie Parke Combs; his children, Angela Michelle Rees and James Matthew Combs (JoAnna); his grandchildren, William Keifer Rees (Lexi), Anthony Kyle Rees, and Abigail Nicole Combs; and his great-grandson, Levi. Together, they built a legacy of laughter, love, and resilience.

Jim’s infectious smile could brighten the darkest day. He had a way of making people laugh, turning gatherings into celebrations. He was well-liked, deeply loved, and effortlessly connected with others—building friendships that stood the test of time.

He lived by a simple but powerful philosophy: “I’m Fine.” It was more than a phrase—it was his way of reassuring those around him that everything would be okay. In those two words, he taught us that happiness is a choice, and that peace comes from within. Jim never dwelled on the gray areas of life; he chose light, optimism, and joy.

Though Jim will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to shine through the stories, smiles, and love he leaves behind. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville, North Carolina. All are welcome to gather and honor the beautiful soul of Jim Combs.

Wells Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Waynesville is honored to serve the Combs family.

Steven Wayne Ross

Steven Wayne Ross, 68, farmer, devoted husband and father, died unexpectedly at his Crabtree home Sunday afternoon, Nov. 9, 2025.

A native of Haywood County, he was born in the “old hospital” in Waynesville Sept. 22, 1957, where his mother, distressed at his small size, was reassured by a nurse who told her, “that’s all right; you birth them small and raise them big.” It was, in fact, a philosophy Steve would follow with breeding cattle in his lifelong love of farming.

Steve was meant to be a farmer from his earliest days. Around age 7 while driving a tractor, he was stopped by a law enforcement officer for failing to come to a complete stop at an intersection. His excuse: he wasn’t old enough to read the stop sign. By the time he was a senior in high school, he was growing his own to***co crops and had his own cattle herd. He also grew vegetables, particularly tomatoes. He was a member of the Haywood County Cattlemen’s Association, where he served as a director, and a member of the Western North Carolina Beef Commission. He was also active in the regional tomato growers’ association, and in 1989 was named the Outstanding Young Burley To***co Farmer for North Carolina by Philip Morris USA.

He was the son of the late Charles and Louise Palmer Ross and was also predeceased by his brother, Jerry Ross, who died of Covid in 2021. Steve was a proud descendant of Cataloochee settlers.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Kathy Nanney Ross, to whom he literally never spoke a harsh word, and by three sons: Justin Ross of the home; Daniel Ross (and Hanna Messer) of Jonathan Creek; and Luke Ross of the home. His wife and sons were the joys of his life, and he took pride in their individuality and personal accomplishments. He is also survived by a nephew, Rusty Ross, who was like another son to him, and another five nephews: Kyle, Brett, Joshua, David and Isaac Nanney as well as a niece, Elisa Nanney. In addition, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Joan Ross of Crabtree, and his brother- and sister-in-law, Stuart and Tara Nanney of Kingsport, Tenn. and his mother-in-law, Yvonne Nanney.

Before his entrance Sunday into God’s presence and the “Church Triumphant,” he was a faithful member of Crabtree United Methodist Church where he served in a number of roles but was especially known for his peach cobbler, cooked over coals in cast-iron. His love of Jesus was reflected in a life of consistent kindness and willingness to help others.

The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Crabtree United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Reeves and DeVere Williams officiating. Pallbearers will be Justin, Daniel, Luke and Rusty Ross, Samuel Moore, Stuart Nanney, Brett and Kyle Nanney.

The family wishes to thank Haywood County’s emergency responders, who worked valiantly to keep Steve with us, and the farming community for its offers of help during this time.

Memorials may be made to Crabtree United Methodist Church, 5405 Crabtree Road, Clyde NC 28721 or the Haywood County Cattlemen’s Association scholarship fund c/o Danny Hyatt, 206 Ratcliffe Cove Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.

The care of Mr. Ross has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville

Thomas Douglas Fisher

Thomas Douglas Fisher, 78, of Waynesville, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. Born in Cartersville, Georgia, Tom was the son of the late Douglas Bedford Fisher and Frances Moore Fisher.

With a Microbiology degree from the University of Georgia, he became a life-long Bulldog. For over thirty years, Tom dedicated his service as General Manager for Sterilization Services of Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia, where they sterilized medical devices for hospitals and other medical facilities. He also proudly served his country as a Marine in the National Guard for many years.

His love for the outdoors was rooted in his childhood visits to his Moore grandparents’ farm, hunting and fishing, to a boy’s delight. He cherished time on the National Ski Patrol at Sugar Mountain, NC, as leader of the Volunteer Ski Patrol on weekends and holidays for much of that time. For over thirty years, from his weekends while in Athens to teaching all three sons how to snowplow and then become the best skiers on the slopes, the entire family loved those incredible winters together, living the good life, opening the slopes and shushing down from the top of Tom Terrific or Switchback from the top of yellow lift—with the entire area all theirs—after the paying crowd had disappeared.

As his sons came of sports age, he treasured coaching each one on their various football teams and was a valuable supporter for them on the soccer fields. He was exceedingly proud of all three sons, supporting them in their endeavors, standing beside them during their challenges, and inspiring them to become the young men he knew they could be. He never doubted that every single one would accomplish exactly that. When his grandchildren came along, they were the delight of his life. He cherished each one, all seven, for their unique gifts, and nothing could please him more than taking them places and cheering them on from the sidelines.

As his health declined, he and Donna moved to their most special place at Polk’s Peak at their beloved Lake Junaluska, where they had been married at Memorial Chapel over fifty-two years ago. Halfway to heaven, their lives came full circle. He came to life there, sitting on the tree-house porch for hours at the time, conversing with the myriad birds, whistling a different tune each day, watching the gymnastics and antics of the squirrels, on the balance beams of the railings. He was enchanted by a raccoon hanging on the nearest tree one day, and he even was thrilled to find a 12-foot King snake on our new stone walkway soon after. The views from this rare, sacred place never disappointed. Lying in bed, sitting on the sofa, or on the porch, he could view at different times a stunning sunrise or sunset, the rising of the Super Harvest moon, or the magical mist over the layers of Cold Mountain and the Balsam Range. And then through the den window, the valley view of houses, cows, on the mountainside and Chamber Mountain--clearly almost to heaven.

Deciding early on after the official diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, they promised each other that every single day on this earth would be an intentional Journey for Joy. And find joy, they did. Together they chased joy down every cove, up every holler, and along every creek. He loved the valley farms, the old barns and their stately silos, the hay fields, the corn rows, but, most of all, the animals. They first discovered the Highland cows off Jonathan Creek. Then came the Herefords, Holsteins, and Black Angus. But their winter delight had to be the seventeen alpacas on a beautiful meadow hillside farm on Iron Duff.

But the highlight and most thrilling had to be the serpentine road up the Blue Ridge Parkway to the top of the world, especially the perfect time of day with the shimmering light filtering through the stain-glass leaves of the most glorious cathedral of all creation, culminating at the top of Waterrock K**b. What beauty, what joy, what a marvelous universe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Teresa Gail.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Donna Polk Fisher; his sons, Derek Douglas (Jessica) Fisher, Thomas Blake Fisher, and Jason Dorn Fisher; his sister, Brenda Fisher; and his seven grandchildren: Heidi Collins, Landon, Grant, Ella, Paxton, Savannah and Audrey Fisher, and several nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life will be held at First United Methodist Church Waynesville, on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 2 p.m.

If preferred over flowers, the family suggests that donations can be made to First United Church Waynesville or to Lake Junaluska Assembly.

The care of Mr. Fisher has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.

Erin Monique Johri

Erin Johri, 36, of Waynesville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, October 24, 2025. Born on May 21, 1989, Erin was the beloved daughter of Vinit “TJ” Johri and the late Susan Johri. She was a cherished sister to Melissa (aka Sister), Stephanie, Jen, Chris, and Mark, and sister-in-law to James. Erin was also the proud aunt to several beloved fur-babies — Griff, C**t, Loke, Ahri, and Annabelle — who brought her endless joy.

Erin will be lovingly remembered by her devoted caretaker and friend, Karissa Finley, as well as close family friends Shirley Topper, Donna Machen, and the late Marc Lehmann.

Erin was known for her mischievous sense of humor and her ability to bring laughter to any room. She gave everyone their own funny nickname, and somehow each one stuck (whether you liked it or not!)

She loved animals, especially her late dog Mandi, and shared a bond of love, fun, friendship, and laughter with her dad, TJ, whom she adored so much that everyone knew—without her saying a word—that he was her person.

Erin’s light, laughter, and love will be missed deeply by all who knew her.
