A Week of Winter Horse Care: Do's and Don'ts:
👍DO- evaluate the diet to see if you need to make any adjustments. Even on good hay, horses may miss key amino acids, minerals, or vitamins. Use a balancer when feeding mostly forage.
👎DON’T- make diet changes suddenly; transition over 7-14 days. Don’t give them a random “bran mash”; it can actually upset a horse’s gut.

A Week of Winter Horse Care: Do's and Don'ts:
👍DO- provide a shelter for your horses housed outside and make sure those kept inside have good ventilation. Proper ventilation in your barn is crucial to your horse’s respiratory health.
Tip: Older horses and hard keepers often benefit from higher-calorie, highly digestible feeds such as Triple Crown Senior or Triple Crown Senior Gold.
👎DON’T- forget about exercise. Exercise or turnout helps weight control, muscle tone and improves circulation, and keeps horses happier, even when it's cold out.

A Week of Winter Horse Care: Do's and Don'ts:
👍DO- Keep Hydration a Priority
Horses drink less in cold weather, increasing colic risk.
• Offer warm water when temperatures drop.
• Add soaked forage (mashes, cubes) to support hydration.
Triple Crown Senior and Senior Gold soak easily for warm mash feeding.
👎DON'T- Ignore Changes in Manure, Appetite, or Drinking
Slower gut motility in winter increases risk for impaction colic.
Increasing fiber through soaked mash feeds or Safe Starch Forage can help maintain healthy hydration and digestion. If your horse looks off, monitor them and contact your vet!!

A Week of Winter Horse Care: Do's and Don'ts:
👍DO- Increase Forage Availability
Forage is a horse’s natural heat source.
• Provide free-choice hay when possible.
• If hay quality is poor, supplement with Triple Crown chopped forages or cube options, Timothy Balance Cubes, or Safe Starch Forage for consistent fiber and calories.
👎DON'T- Forget Hoof & Coat Support
Cold weather, frozen ground, and dry air can stress hooves and skin.
A balanced diet with high-quality amino acids, minerals, and fat—supplied through Triple Crown’s balancers and senior feeds—supports hoof integrity, topline, and healthy skin. Our Hoof or Coat Functional Wafers are also an excellent supplement to support your horse!
