Vinegar and Water Soak
Vinegar’s acetic acid helps kill bacteria and dissolve wax and pesticide residues. This method is especially good for firmer produce.
Ingredients:
1 part white vinegar (e.g., 1 cup)
3 parts water (e.g., 3 cups)
Instructions:
Fill a large, clean bowl or a disinfected sink basin with the water and vinegar solution.
Add your produce to the solution.
Soak for 2 to 5 minutes (shorter for delicate items like berries). Avoid soaking for longer periods, as the acid can alter the taste and texture.
Swish the produce around with your hands, using a gentle scrub brush for thicker-skinned items like potatoes or carrots.
Drain the produce in a colander and rinse thoroughly under cold, running water.
Pat dry before storing or eating.
***Baking Soda and Water Soak***
Baking soda has been shown to effectively remove a high percentage of pesticides from the surface of produce.
Ingredients:
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup water
Instructions:
Combine the baking soda and water in a clean bowl or basin, stirring until the baking soda is dissolved.
Place the produce in the solution.
Soak for approximately 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Rinse well under cold, running water.
Dry completely before storing or eating.
Both methods offer a simple, inexpensive, and all-natural way to enhance the cleaning process beyond plain water.
