There is something sacred about the space around a person who is dying.

People often ask me if they can still hear if they are non-responsive and nearing their last breath.

I respond by saying that I truly believe that their awareness deepens at the end of life, which for me, means…
They feel more.
They sense more.
They know what you bring into the room.
They know that you are in the room.
Your energy can be felt.
Your presence can be felt.

This reminds us that…
A hurried presence feels different than a gentle one.
Noise feels different than quiet.
Tension feels different than love.

And the words we say matter too.

“I love you.”
“Thank you.”
“I’m sorry.”
“I forgive you.”
“Please forgive me.”
“You can rest now.”

These are not small things.
These are the things that stay.

Sometimes there are words that have waited a lifetime to be spoken; apologies, forgiveness, the softening of old hurts,
the quiet release of what has been carried for far too long.
Say them.
If you can.

Even if you cannot be there, your words can still reach them, through a phone held gently to their ear, or through someone who can sit beside them and speak your words for you.

So, if you have ever wondered, “did they hear me?” My answer is, yes.
In the ways that matter most… yes.

We are called to be mindful…
Of our presence.
Of our energy.
Of the words we choose to leave behind.

Because in the end, what we bring into the room, and what we speak into their space, may become what they carry with them.
