These are the five things I wish people knew about autism.

1. A meltdown is not a tantrum. It's usually just the result of sensory or emotional overload.

2. Eye contact doesn't measure connection. Many autistic people show love and attention in many different ways.

3. You probably won't realize how far they've come based on how they're acting and behaving in public.

4. Having routine isn't stubbornness. It helps make a confusing world more predictable.

5. People with autism aren't broken. They just have a disability.

Changes and transitions with schedules for people with autism can be rough! Happy to report that returning back to school was as chill for Mitchell as he was on Christmas break!

I hope all the autism parents out there had a similar experience with their child's transition back to school this past week.

Building communities where there is a culture of belonging takes intentionality from everyone. It does not happen organically.

It takes parents pushing into the community to show people unfamiliar with severe autism what it looks like and that it shouldn't be feared.

It takes brave family members and friends to bear the burden of the uncomfortableness that this sometimes brings.

Thank you for helping to move all this in the right direction, Ramon.

The Christmas parade and tree lighting ceremony are a special time for families. It's no different for autism families- other than the lights, loud sounds, and large crowds can be overwhelming for some folks with autism.

Fortunately, Mitchell has been exposed to many stimuli over the past decade and he has slowly grown to tolerate, if not enjoy, the festivities. We recognize that doesn't work for everyone, but it worked for Mitchell!

Whether your family or a friend's family includes someone with autism or not, we hope you and your loved ones are able to celebrate and enjoy the Christmas festivities as much as your abilities allow this year! 🎄✝️🎅

What does your financial gift do to support the autism community?

It provides programs like family group hikes, adaptive workouts, and sensory-friendly public outings (like we see here with Mitchell and his brother), giving families the opportunity to experience the world in a more inclusive and comfortable way.

We connect families facing the challenges of autism so they can encourage and support one another.

Soon we’ll offer evening respite to give families a much-needed break. Every donation not only supports these impactful experiences but helps us with our most impactful project of building a long-term, thriving living community for adults with high-support needs autism.

This is the difference you make when you give to Mitchell’s Mountain! The impact is tremendous for families that are often isolated from society because of the effects of their child's autism.

This Giving Tuesday is the day to support us in our mission to help families impacted by autism. More info coming soon or you can click the link below! Thank you for changing lives and creating community.

As Mitchell gets older there are fewer spaces that are inclusive and accepting of his autistic behaviors, such as vocal and physical stimming.

Autism families across the country feel this same pressure and scrutiny when they venture into public spaces with their autistic child.

During this Thanksgiving holiday, instead of judgement, let's do our best to be inclusive and bring a sense of belonging to autism families.

I promise, they will be thankful for your supportive hospitality.
