Our former employee, Selma Swafford, passed away November 17, 2025. At the time of her passing, her full obituary was not available. I just noticed that this was now available and wanted to post it for the community to see and remember Punkin.

Selma Swafford Obituary
Selma Swafford age 61 of Welch, West Virginia was born on April 4, 1964 in Welch and the daughter of Herman A. Sr., and Joan Harris Swafford.
Also known as Punkin to her family and friends, she grew up in Hartwell, West Virginia. At the age of 12, her family moved to Yukon, West Virginia, she became a member of Free Mission in Christ Church under the pastorage of Elders Dewey and Thelma Duff.
After completing her education at Big Creek High School in 1982, she joined the United States Army. Upon returning home to West Virginia, she had made her home in Welch.
Punkin was employed for a number of years at Flat Iron Drug Store and was very well known for her friendly, helpful assistance. At the time of her passing, she was a cashier at Goodsons’ Supermarket both located in Welch.
Punkin had a sweet, calm spirit. She warmly greeted others wherever and whenever with that very same spirit. She was a homebody and enjoyed keeping her home and surroundings very neat and orderly.
She was preceded in death by her father, Herman Sr., and her mother, Joan. Early on Monday, November 17, 2025, she peacefully departed this life in the comforts of her home.
Punkin leaves to mourn her passing one daughter, Ashley N. Swafford of Charleston, West Virginia; her grandson, Isaiah Swafford and her two devoted brothers, Sherman “Skip” and his wife, Nancy Swafford of Parker, Colorado and Herman A. “Buddy” (June Covington) Swafford Jr., of Lexington, North Carolina; a friend, who was closer than a sister, Eady Hankins, her neighbor of Welch; also, a host of relatives and friends who loved and cared for her.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, on Sunday, December 7, 2025 at St. James Missionary Baptist Church 135 Court Street in Welch, with Pastor George Masterson officiating. Services for Ms. Swafford entrusted to Gregory-Page Funeral Home in Welch.
