Shake it up! 🌀 We know the idea of Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) can sound a little strange at first - but it’s actually a research-backed tool our PTs use to support strength, tone, and motor development.

In our newest blog post, BAC physical therapist Lacey Anderson, PT, DPT breaks down how WBV works, who it can help, and why kids love it (hint: it feels like play - even when their muscles are working hard!).

Tap the link to learn more about how we use Whole-Body Vibration at the BAC - and how these "good vibrations" can make a big difference inside a therapy session!

Some of the best OT tools aren’t fancy toys - they’re everyday items hiding in plain sight! And if you’re officially ❄️ OVER ❄️ real snow but your kids aren’t 😅😅, BAC occupational therapist Elizabeth Martin thinks plastic-bag snowballs are the perfect compromise 🤝 Just ball up a few grocery / packaging bags, secure them with tape, and you’ve got a soft, safe, indoor-friendly play tool + plus a great way to give those extra bags a second life instead of tossing them.

Why Liz loves them in OT:
🔵 Fine motor: crumpling and grasping builds hand / finger strength & dexterity
🔵 Bilateral coordination: both hands work together to create snowballs and throw / catch them
🔵 Gross motor: throwing, crawling, squatting, retrieving = full-body strength and balance work
🔵 Sensory: crinkly texture + sound + proprioceptive input for regulation
🔵 Visual motor integration: tracking moving snowballs and aiming at targets develops hand-eye coordination
🔵 Executive functioning: turn-taking, flexibility, and problem-solving through games

All the fun of a snowball fight, none of the wet socks (iykyk) 😂

Fitness Friday ❤️ Heart Health Month Edition!

February is Heart Health Month, and one of the best things families can do for their hearts is also one of the simplest: move together! That might look like a family walk after dinner - or maybe a little family skip when the mood strikes 😉

Walking (and skipping!) helps strengthen the heart, improve endurance, build lower-body strength, and support coordination. Skipping adds an extra challenge by increasing cardiovascular demand while targeting bilateral coordination, balance, timing, and rhythm - all important skills for growing bodies!

In this clip, Carolyn is skipping to show that heart-healthy movement doesn’t have to be complicated or boring. A walk around the neighborhood, a skip down the sidewalk, or a playful movement break at home all count. When movement is fun and shared, it’s easier to build healthy habits that stick!

✨ Every child deserves a way to be heard ✨

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. AAC is used to support an individual’s ability to communicate a wide range of intents across varied communication partners and contexts.

Augmentative: a communication support in addition to speech
Alternative: a communication support used as an alternative to verbal speech

There is a wide range of what AAC supports can look like. Examples include the use of gestures, pointing to images, using a keyboard or alphabet board to spell out a word, or use of a speech-generating device.

A speech-generating device is a high-tech AAC support that, when activated, can produce audio output. For example, an individual could use an app on an iPad, press a series of icons, and express, “I want to play bubbles.”

✨ Please reach out to your child’s speech language pathologist if you have questions regarding AAC supports, need support in programming a high-tech AAC device, or if you are wondering if AAC could be a helpful support for your child ✨
