Fitness Friday: Stairs Edition 👣

Functional? ✅ Adaptable? ✅ Relatively easy to practice at home? ✅

Stairs are one of our go-to tools for building lower-body strength (glues, quads, calves), core stability, balance, and endurance - while also targeting postural control, bilateral coordination, and motor planning!

Want to make it fun?
🔴 Think about how different animals would navigate the stairs
🟡 Count steps or sing songs
🔵 Deliver objects up & down the stairs - such as pretend food for a hungry stuffed animal, or a piece for a game like Pop the Pig! Count steps or sing songs

✨ SAFETY FIRST! You know your child's unique abilities best. Offer close supervision and remind children to hold the railing for support and take one step at a time.

Last but DEFINITELY not least: interoception - the sense that helps us notice what’s going on inside our bodies.

Hungry? Tired? Heart racing? Need to use the bathroom? That’s interoception doing its thing! Learning to tune in to these body clues helps kids build self-awareness and both physical & emotional regulation.

Thank you for following along with our Sensory Systems Series! 🧠✨ Please remember - each child’s sensory system is unique. There's no “right" or "normal" way to experience and engage with the world. If you do notice that sensory challenges are impacting your child's daily life, our team of occupational therapists is always here to help! Give us a call at 781-239-0100 or email frontdesk@bostonabilitycenter.com.

When most people hear “sensory strategies,” they picture kids with fidget toys, weighted blankets, and noise-canceling headphones.

Truth: Adults are just as guilty of sneaking in sensory hacks throughout the day. Ever had one of those moments where your brain just screams for a break, and what do you do? Step outside for a breath of fresh air? Put on your favorite playlist to drown out the office chatter? Or maybe you’re the “chew gum like it’s a going out of style” type during long meetings. Yep, that’s sensory regulation in action.

Here are some everyday adult sensory strategies:
🌀 Movement: Taking a quick walk or stretching like you’re auditioning for a yoga video
👂 Sound: Cranking up calming tunes or using white noise to hide that coworker’s loud typing
✋ Touch: Rubbing your hands together, holding a stress ball, or cozying up with a soft sweater
👃 Smell: Lighting a candle or sniffing essential oils to convince your brain it’s “relax time"
👅 Oral input: Sipping coffee, chewing gum, or munching on snacks

Why does this matter? Because recognizing that sensory needs don’t magically vanish when you hit adulthood can help us all (parents included) normalize these strategies for kids. And honestly, when adults model healthy sensory habits, we’re showing the little ones that self-regulation isn’t a phase - it’s a lifelong skill ✨

Introducing Fitness Friday 💪

In this new series, you’ll see BAC physical therapist Carolyn Graham demonstrating exercises we commonly include in our PT and OT home programs.

Honestly, you're not going to find any trendy fluff here 👋 Just intentional, evidence-informed exercises (that actually make sense for real-life!) chosen by our pediatric experts who understand how kids' bodies really work.

Our goal is to equip families with practical + powerful exercises that promote strength and confidence 💪

Stay tuned and get ready to move! 💫

Our Lost & Found is overflowing with well-loved items ❤️💛💙 Take a peek at the video 👀 If anything looks like it belongs to your family, feel free to stop by the BAC and pick it up!

💪 Meet the proprioceptive system! Thanks to sensory receptors in our muscles and joints, this system helps us know where our bodies are in space and how much force to use.

Soooo many families come to the BAC saying things like, “He doesn’t know his own strength!” - we're thinking of the kids who offer high fives that could bust through a solid block of wood 🪵✋ and big bear hugs that knock grown-ups off their feet! When this system needs some support, you might see lots of crashing onto the floor or into furniture, or walls, or people.

Proprioceptive input (think pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, and heavy work) can be incredibly regulating and grounding for the nervous system. 🎥 Check out our video for some ideas to try at home! 🎥

As we step into a brand new year, we want to start with a heartfelt THANK YOU to all the families who share their incredible children with us at the Boston Ability Center ❤️💛💙 It’s a true privilege to be part of their growth, their development, and their JOY - and we don’t take that lightly!

At the BAC, we believe that the best outcomes for children happen when families and clinicians work together as a team 🤝 A new year brings new goals, new challenges, and new wins...and by sharing insights, strategies, and priorities, we can create a supportive, consistent environment that helps children thrive both at home and in therapy.

And as this year begins, we want you to know that we see you.

We see you driving your kids to school, to appointments, to extracurriculars...all in Boston traffic, no less! We see you reading those books about sensory processing on your Kindle in the waiting room. We see you pausing for a few extra moments (even when your brain is running a million miles a minute) to celebrate your child balancing on one foot...or writing the letter A...or saying SPIN instead of PIN. We see you making time to practice new skills between sessions, and even getting creative to include curious siblings along the way.

Your trust, effort, and commitment allow us to provide the very best care for your child - and as we begin this new year together, we want you to know how genuinely grateful we are.

We SEE you, and we THANK you ✨ Here's to 2026! 🌟
