PLEASE READ :
Tomorrow is National Special Education Day. Fifty years ago, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) became law. This opened the door to a free and appropriate public education for millions of children with disabilities. Before IDEA over 1.75 Billion students were not served

However, that doesn’t always mean fair. I am 59 years of age. In first grade 1972, I noticed the “special” kids OR many other horrific names, were all in ONE CLASSROOM ages 5 to 21 years of age. They were never really out or in the hallways.
This is the story:
Our bathroom broke in the classroom and I needed to go so we walked down the long corridor to the main one for the floor.
When we walked in a very tall girl (probably about 17-18 years of age ) and mainly non verbal was in the bathroom looking quite scared. I tried to ask her what was wrong, but she could not communicate. I told her it was ok I would bring her back. Somehow while speaking with her my hand went into a toilet and she started to cry. It was not her fault. Just then my teacher walked in and screamed. YOU RE**RD and MORON ( these terms were in the DSM), leave her alone. I assured my teacher I was fine but the girl started to cry and then I did. They literally dragged her back to the room.

Back in my classroom I couldn’t get the words out of my head.

I arrived home and retold the story to my MOM. She was angry and grabbed my hand and we walked back the four blocks to school. I was afraid she was going to yell at the girl. WHAT MY MOM DID NEXT is why I am a Speech Language Pathologist.

She marched into the principals office and demanded to see the teacher and principal immediately.

She told them that she wanted to teach her daughter that all children deserve to learn and those children would be getting two helpers on Fridays to do crafts, cooking, and other skills. They said ok, and for the rest of the year my mother showed me that everyone should be treated equally and all could learn.

That stayed with me to this day.

Please remember to not use words that hurt.

Recalling 1990, I was a speech-language pathology intern at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, NY. Another intern and I were assigned to an AIDS unit. Upon entering the room, I observed that many patients struggled to eat due to the advanced stages of the disease. No one was assisting them, so I requested softer foods, created communication boards, and simply sat with them. The other intern refused to enter the room, citing unfounded concerns about contracting AIDS and dying. She also made a misguided statement that individuals who were not gay would not have AIDS. I reported her to the head of the speech department, and she was reassigned. The ignorance surrounding AIDS at that time was astounding. If we are not cautious, this lack of understanding may recur. Please do not let fear and ignorance equal hate. Love always wins.

Now we too are not professionals.

Now we too are not professionals.

The U.S. Department of Education has proposed a definition of a "professional degree" program that excludes audiology and speech-language pathology. ASHA has been advocating for our professions to be included as professional degrees to ensure access to higher loan limits since July. Join us in advocacy and tell your members of Congress how valuable your profession is! Learn more: https://at.asha.org/QJ
