Your spine has 23 soft, gel-like discs that cushion the vertebrae and act as shock absorbers. Each disc has a tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus) and a softer inner core (nucleuas pulposes). These discs allow the spine to bend, twist, and flex and absorb pressure during daily movement, like running or jumping.
