What is a Family Resource Center?
Imagine a place where anyone in the community can find support for where they are in their life without judgement. Anyone. A single parent, a youth with autism, people who are new to the community.
A family resource center is that place. The data shows an FRC impacts communities by decreasing the amount of money a community spends on child welfare, increases school readiness, promotes family economic success and most of all creates ongoing natural supports to build a thriving community.
Akin’s FRC is a community center with a twist. We have child and family counseling, wraparound services for families in mental health, parenting classes, school-based services, and LGBTQIA+ services. We have a tiny store open to all in the community which carries cleaning and hygiene supplies as well as diapers, clothing, and some food. We host family-fun nights each month. We host self-care nights for adults, lego building nights, and partner with local financial businesses to hold financial literacy classes for free. All of which are open to the community, not just our clients.
In the next few years, we plan to expand our FRC and host cooking classes, toddler and me classes, and tutoring opportunities. Community members would be able to volunteer to teach or help someone else. We are building and strengthening our relationships with other community partners to make real-time referrals and warm hand-offs, creating a one-stop for social services needs.
