Happy EMS Week 2022: Rising to the Challenge!

Cardiac arrest happens a lot more often than what we would like. This is exactly why EMS exists. We are there when the worst happens. CPR and early defibrillation are key but even with quick calls to 911 and perfect compressions, it doesn’t always result in the outcome we want. Sometimes it does, sometimes we take someone with no pulse, no breathing, and no signs of life and we bring pulses back, we bring breathing back, and even sometimes the patient wakes up aware of who they are and back to their normal selves. We wish this happened more often. When this does happen, it absolutely is something to CELEBRATE!!

From January 1, 2021 0000 to May 3, 2021 0730, 24 Eastern Wake EMS providers provided extrodinary care to 8 cardiac arrests victims that ultimately resulted in being discharged back home to their families.

After Eastern Wake EMS closed on May 3, 2021, some of our providers went on to accept jobs at Wake County EMS. From May 3, 2021 0730 to December 31, 2021 2359, 20 former (always) Eastern Wake EMS providers played a vital role in 16 successful resuscitations.

We will forever be proud of our employees!

Do you know CPR?! There is no better time to learn than now!!

As we kick off EMS week we would like to thank our entire staff for all the hard work and dedication they display day in and day out. The theme for EMS week 2022 is rising to the occasion.

Speaking of rising to the occasion-
We are happy to announce 113 Cardiac Arrest Survivors during the 2021 calendar year. This is nothing short of amazing, given the extreme conditions with call volume and staffing we experienced over the last few years.

Please take a moment to say thank you to our crews and staff, they deserve it!

This may just be a pile of clothes.

To some of you, it may be a useless pile of old uniforms.

Why do you still have these?

Those shoes need to be shined.

That uniform has bleach stains!

To some of us…

This useless pile of old fibers…

These are our stories. Community helped. Lives changed.

That bleach stain was earned during the pandemic when cleaning supplies were a luxury and no one knew if any of them even worked.

Those boots, those scars, were earned going down into the woods to pull patients out of a wrecked vehicle.

That pink ribbon was proudly worn for breast cancer awareness.

These fibers, tell stories. The patients we helped, the patients we learned from, the patients we made a difference for.

It was an honor to wear this uniform.

All good things must come to an end. Today marks the end of an era; the closing of a chapter. Our hearts ache; our eyes are filled with tears.

Wendell Rescue Squad started in 1962. Zebulon Rescue Squad started in 1970. Knightdale Rescue Squad started in 1977. And Rolesville EMS started in 1995. All with one purpose in mind: serve the community, help those in need, and just be there for those who need us.

In 2005, Wendell, Zebulon, and Knightdale came together to form Eastern Wake EMS. In 2008, Rolesville joined.

“Serving our community together.”

For 15 years and 10 months ambulances marked with red, blue, and white stripes have responded to calls all over Wake County. Even providing mutual aid to surrounding counties. Hundreds of thousands of calls. Hundreds of thousands of bandaids. Hundreds of thousands of lives changed.

Today, Eastern Wake EMS is officially hanging up our stethoscopes, turning off our lights and sirens, and marking out of service permanently.

The Wake County EMS System officially becomes just Wake County EMS.

We challenge Wake County EMS to continuously push themselves, to keep raising the bar of greatness. Always put the citizens and visitors of Wake County first, always. Take care of each other. Wake County EMS, stay strong, stay humble, stay safe.

You’ll see some of our faces on Wake County EMS trucks. Some of our faces will now be on EMS trucks in other counties. Some of us will be at the hospital. And some of us walked away from EMS and the medical field completely.

Before we leave, we want to pause and thank you, our community and our patients. YOU are the reason we showed up to our shifts, shift after shift. We learned so much from you. We are honored to have been there for you when you needed us.

Our final words of advice:

1. Eat healthy
2. See your doctor regularly
3. Take your medications as prescribed
4. Don’t use drugs
5. Don’t drink and drive
6. Stop smoking
7. Learn CPR and Stop the Bleed
8. Take care of each other, even strangers
9. Hug your loved ones
10. Dream big

We will always be ! We will never forget where we came from.

From everyone who has at one point been on our roster and part of our family...

Mic.... drop. 🎤💨
